How do I find records for 11th regiment?

I am led to believe that my GGGrandfather JAMES BAMFORD who was born 1822 Liverpool Lancashire enlisted in the Army on the 6th January1841 at the age of 19years at Liverpool for the eleventh Regiment.
Family rumour has it that he served in India.
He discharged from the Army in Sydney Australia in 1853.
Can any one tell me where I might be able to find his enlistment record and /or discharge record.?Or anything that will help me find him or when and how he arrived in Australia.

Jan,
National Archives at Kew is the place to look for his service papers.
Only from 1864 onwards were the 11th in India, so it's unlikely he served there (with the 11th at least)

Hi Jan,
Neil's quite right, Kew is the place to start. I traced one of my family who enlisted in 1820 in the 33rd and then joined the Rifle Brigade. He was discharged in London in 1845. I managed to get his full service history, some 12 pages, with an extraordinary amount of information. The do not however give any details of family in service records.

If you go to the Australian Archives webpage you should be able to work your way through to the relevent information you are looking for.   There are heaps of jumping off points, just a matter of using the relevent one.  Good Luck

I will try all of the mentioned sites and see what I come up with.

Luckily for me I have had contact with a distant cousin on another site who it seems has all the information that I am after.
