Cunningham anymore)
spouse  Margaret Gray  (spelling again other rel.  have Grey)

are there still records  in l700  in  Scotland

do  I go to nationalarchives.gov.uk    for such records   or   Where

Sorry if my original post confused you. I do that to a lot of people.  ;D

In census records, ages are not always exact -- either people do not know their partner's true age or they choose to lie about it for whatever reason (the ladies are definitely the worst  ;)). I would imagine Matthew, getting on in years, left his son to give his age details and perhaps William gave the wrong age? Just a suggestion.

I'm afraid I can't find a marriage between Matthew and his wife anywhere. Perhaps someone else may have better luck that I did?

Cunnings/Cunningham was the names that were put for Matthew's father. Keep both in mind when searching as the family could have changed between them throughout the years! Grey is also another example of where the spelling is interchangeable. Grey/Gray may and probably will be used at will so another one to keep note of.

ScotlandsPeople (http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/) is the official site for Scottish births, marriages and deaths. Births and baptisms of the Old Parish Records go from 1553 - 1854 and the same with the banns and marriage records. It depends on whether records have been preserved to find your Cunninghams and whether they were helpful in registering all events!  ;)

Good luck.

Hi countryozy,

Here are some notes, you can decide what one is yours.
Mathew Cunningham was born 17 Jan 1800, christened 22 Jan 1800 in Wemyss, Fife, to parents William Cunningham and Margaret Gray. This is an extracted record, which means that it is transcribed from actual records. Some records on the
Family Search site, International Genealogical Index (IGI) or the Latter Day Saints (LDS) site are submitted by members and as such may not be accurate.

This may not be the correct one, we would need to prove it.

There is another Matthew Cunningham born in Burntisland, Fife, on 23 Apr 1793 to parents James Cunningham and Mary Raeburn. This is an extracted record too.

In the 1861 census at Spittal,
Mathew aged 68 (1893/4) Fish Curer /Cooper
Elizabeth aged 64
Mary aged 21

In the 1851 census at Spittal Berwick upon Tweed
Mathew aged 57 (1893/4) Fish Curer and Grocer
Elizabeth aged 55
Children very young,
Mary aged 12
Eliza aged 10

In the 1841 census at Spittal
Mathew aged 48 (1893/4) Cooper
Elizabeth aged 42
James son aged 4
Mary aged 3
Eliza aged 1

I did a search on Scotland People (SP) website and there were only 2 Mathew Cunningham births registered in Fife between 1780 and 1820, so it has to be one of them.

Looking at the 1891 census, son William is born in Rhosymedre, Denbighshire and is shown as 45 years old. Therefore, Mathew the father may have been married outwith Scotland and possibly in Wales. The family names in this census suggest that the first Mathew Cunningham is the correct one, son named William and granddaughter named Margaret.

In the 1881 census,  at 16 Chapel Street, Ruabon.
William aged 45 b Rhosymedre Sanitary Pipe Maker
Mary Ann wife aged 41
Mathew son aged 18 Brick maker
Thomas son aged 16 Brick maker
Margaret daughter aged 14
James son aged 12
Mathew father aged 86?  (1895) Fifeshire, Scotland.

In the 1871 census, 57 Church Street, Ruabon

William aged 34 b Ruabon, Denbigh Brick maker
Mary Ann wife 31 Overton, Flintshire
William son aged 10 b Rhosymedre
Mathew son aged 8 b Rhosymedre
Thomas son aged 6 b Rhosymedre
Margaret  E. daughter aged 4 b Rhosymedre
James son aged 2 b Rhosymedre
Mathew Father 74 , (1897) in Scotland.

In the 1861 census, 42 Church Street, Ruabon.

Mathew,  Head, widower aged 64 (1897) Scotland occupation Cashier.
William aged 25 b Ruabon, Denbigh Labourer
Mary Ann wife 21 Overton, Flintshire
William son aged 1-month b Ruabon
