Ezekiel HUTCHINSON

Hello,
Ezekiel was born in about 1860 in Newcastle on Tyne and lived with his parents, Robert and Margaret. In 1881 he was a Billiard Marker! and in 1891 he was a barman living with his "wife", Eliza and her son John William in All Saints, Newcastle on Tyne. I can find a marriage for Ezekiel James in the 3rd quarter of 1885(Vol 10b Page 234) BUT I am unable to find out who he married. Can anyone help please?

The Newcastle Register Office should have answered your query as it reveals "the" spouse, rather than FreeBMD's several options. Unfortunately it does not , in Ezekiel's case, and introduces an additional  Catherine Hedley as a "wife" option.

When the actress Jane Horrocks was recently getting her tree done by the BBC TV programme "So who do you think you are ? ", she discovered that one of her ancestors was a "billiard marker"... an expert said a "billiard marker" was basically a billiard referee, who also prepared the table and the room for competitions.... but also sometimes got involved in match betting and possibly shady deals... so, in some cases a spiv, conman, etc.

Note that the death of a 22 yr old Mary Ann Hutchinson was registered in Newcastle in Sept (3rd) Qtr 1887.
