Harbutts in the Birmingham area
« on: Friday 23 March 07 13:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to find info on any Harbutts in the Birmingham area. My father Martin Harbutt (Niel, now deceased born in 1955) was from Dudley and his parents Ronald and Pearl (Adams) were from their also. Born around 1930. Rons Father was called "Red" as he had red hair, dont know his real name, he married someone called Rebecca. Would have been born around 1890.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Harry & welcome to Rootschat    :D

If you obtain a copy of Ronald Harbutt's marriage
to Pearl Adams, this should give Ronald's fathers
name & occupation.
Any idea when & where they married?

Welcome Harry !

This is the classic situation needing you to work backwards thru the Indexes of Birth and Marriages ....

Look for your Grandparents marriage - obtain the Cert and it should identify each partner's father.

Work back from that (or you could seek out their Birth Certs to also get their mothers names) and find the Birth entries for Ronald and Pearl's Fathers - then again, look for an earlier marriage of those names until you are in 1901 Census timeframe.

I'll get you started ....

Whoops, sorry Sue - I see you are on the case.

Harry - Search here ... you will have to register, but not pay ...

Use the COMPLETE INDICES option

Harry

You could look for a marriage for them at
http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

Make sure you check the Complete Index.

Was your Father Ronald their eldest child.
It would help to narrow down the search.

Working backwards is definitely the best way.  However there is a useful website:

http://www.bmsgh.org/wmbmd/

where you can search births/marriages/deaths in the Birmingham area.  Their transcriptions are not complete so you won't find more recent records there yet.

However, they do show that in 1918 Arthur Harbutt married Rebecca Millership at Christchuch in Oldbury, Sandwell, and that the birth of an Arthur Harbutt was registered at Oldbury in 1893.

If you find Ronald's birth entry on the index at Ancestry it will show his mother's maiden name. (the website I gave the link for doesn't go up to the 1930s at present.)
