Hi all.

Prue, to the best of my knowledge, there's no other 'weddings' around that time period.

China, I'll see what I can do with the scan, it's a new scanner I have so I'm still learning about it all . . .. .  . probably take me a few years to get it right . ..  :-\ :-\ :-\

I love the photo, she looks so peaceful, but with a hint of sexy (if you know what I mean)   I was a little concerned with the length of the dress, I thought it rather short for a wedding dress.  But Nellie was always a bit unconventional.

This is the lady who would pack her tea-pot in her suitcase and go overseas just leaving a note for the family saying . . . . 'gone away, back next month'   She took the tea-pot so she could make a decent cuppa.    ;D ;D

Barbara  :)

Having examined that dress in great detail while touching it up. I am convinced that it is a wedding dress. it has a train which can be seen going off to the left behind the dark stain.

Here is a link that gives a bit more info:

http://fashion-era.com/Weddings/1912_old_wedding_photos_titanic.htm

There is one 'fashion plate' one dated 1913 that is similar.

Good find Gadget  :D

Maybe (god forbid!!) I was wrong about the date.  The hair worn down still bothers me, but if as Barbara said her gran used always to wear it down right into adulthood, then we can rule it out as an indicator of an age below 16.  Maybe gran was a bit of an individual, and wore her hair and dress the way she wanted!

The shoe is very much of the 1920s with the cross bar, but not knowing much about shoes (except that I like red ones!) it could easily be an earlier design.

From what Barbara has told me, Prue, her Gran was some lady  :) She always had her hair down until she was quite old. It was a wonderful auburn colour and nearly reached the floor!

Gran was also a woman who bucked the trend, so I'm going with it  :)

I have the feeling our Barbara has a lot of Granny in her  :D :D :D

I bet she like red shoes as well!

Love red shoes Gadget, I clicked mine too many times (and wished I was in Kansas!! ) and they finally gave out on me .. . . . . . . ;D ;D

I'm really hoping it was her in her wedding dress as (so far) I've no other photo's of her when she was younger.   I'd love to have seen the original without all the chalky appearance and marks on it.   Heavy sigh, deep depression . . . . .   :-\ :-\    And I absolutely adore the style of dress, all that lacework, beautiful.

This is about my tenth attempt to get it right, if it doesn't work this time I'm about to throw the new scanner away and go back to the old one . .  .. ...  .. :(

By the way, she was only five foot tall in her high heels          ;D

Hi Barbara,

I think we've come to the conclusion that the lady is the same as the one of your gran in later years, and that the date could indeed be 1910s not 1920s, and that this is a bride's dress (although perhaps strange she is on her own, but she sounds like she did things her own way, your grandmother!), so I reckon we can be pretty sure it's your gran.

I have had very good results treating photos with similar problems to this one, so any photo conservator would be able to do the same...unfortunately we are a rare breed.  I think there are only 4 or 5 of us specialising in this field in the whole country  :-\

Hi Barbara

This scan isn't as good as the other. I think it's bleached out the detail in the light areas and it is very difficult to bring out the detail that we got from the other one on the Photo Rest board using nifty curves and levels and stuff :'( :'( :'(

I've outlined (in red to match any shoes  :) ) where the train is.

Hi Prue, unfortunately there's no way I could afford the cost of a 'real' restoration although I would love to just to see the dress in all it's glory.

But a big thank you to everyone who has passed comment on the pic.

Gadget, I can see where the train is,  it must have been a long one.
