Looking for Nell/ Ellen Dobson
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 10:08 BST (UK) »
Having problems finding Nell/Ellen Dobson born late 1800's/ early 1900/s in Berkshire probably Maidenhead.  Have tried Genes Reunited and Ancestry but as I'm unable to receive Broadband it takes forever and is very frustrating!  Very grateful for any help,
Regards Abiam

Have you got her on 1901 census? (or her family witohut her) to try and narrow down year of birth a bit?

I looked 1900 and 1899 - none in right area.
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex

Hi,
I have the family in the 1901 census living at Fairview Hitcham Bucks.
Joseph 48 Father Priscilla 37 Mother. Children Clara 12 Charlie 9 Rose 7
Ethel 5 Edith 3 Violet (May) 1.
Missing are Leslie (male) I belive to be younger,
my father Laurence born 1905, Arthur born 1904 and Nell.  Florence  (Born1887 therefore old enough to be working).  My poor Granmother!!!
I really want to know when Nell and Leslie were born.  Most of the children were born in Maidenhead and both parents died there.
Any help gratefully received, Regards Abiam

 Hello Barbara,
I think Leslie could well be the right one, not so sure about Helen.  They were very poor and with all those children what was she doing in Eton, about 6 or 7 miles away.
I suppose the only sure way of finding out is to order another birth cert... this family tree business is becoming quite an expensive hobby!
Thank you for looking,
Best wishes Abiam

Hello Abiam
In 1891 they were in Cookham and their eldest daughter, Emma aged 4, was born in Taplow so they did move around a bit.
Barbara
Just checked - Hitcham is in the Eton Registration district!

Well done, the fact that Eton is the reg dis for Hitcham explains a lot.  And I believe you found the correct Helen in 1901 as the previous child Violet was also born in Hitcham.  And I think Leslie is right as I know for sure they were in Maidenhead from1904 and Leslie was supposed to be the youngest.
Must add that you say in 1891 they were in Cookham but Cookham District was a huge area (but small village) and the most populated area was Maidenhead where they lived in Denmark Street.  Long since pulled down, thank goodness.
So many, many thanks Barbara,
Abiam
