GRO Birth Indexes during WWI
« on: Saturday 31 March 07 15:40 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was born in the first quarter of 1918. I've checked the GRO birth Indexes for that quarter and year, but there is no entry for him.

I was wondering if because of the war the indexes are not as complete as they would normally be, or if his father was serving in the war and wasn't present at the registration if he would have been marked down under his mothers maiden name?

Also is there any way of getting hold of death register entries after 2004 at present as 3 of my grandparents have died since then?
one in 2005, 2006 and the latest was feb 2007.

Thanks in advance.

Hi - I dont think the war impacted the registers ... and if the Informant was the mother, and she stated the fathers name, then that would be the norm and he'd show on the actual Cert and the child would have his surname.

Try searching the Quarter AFTER you think - he may have been a late registration, or born right at the end of the Quarter ... also check for mis-spellings ... the Mothers Maiden name will also be shown ...

Dont know about 2004 + !

Hello there,

I would imagine that your later (post 2004) certificates could be got from your local GRO office. By going to the GRO website you can order certificates and also there is a search for your local office facility

www.gro.gov.uk

Hope that this helps..

Best wishes

I've already tried that   :(

Along with checking the 3 years either side just to make sure. Even though i know his dob is 27th jan 1918

I might have to try posting a specific look up request in the yorkshire section to see if any one can check the local registers.

Thanks guys.

I should write to the local office where you think he would have been registered.  There is always the possibility that for some reason the record did not reach the central GRO.
