this may be a red herring, but there's a marriage on FreeBmd for a Daniel Jackson sept qtr 1837 Neath vol 26 pg 489 with 3 possible brides on the page, one of whom is Gwenllian Bevan.
1841 census Grigwallt, Margam HO107/1422/21 folio 7 pg 8
Morgan Bevan 70 farmer
Elizabeth 65
Hannah 25
Gwenllian Jackson 30
Mary Jackson 11 months
all born in county
Margam would have been covered by Neath registration district

In 1851, Gwenllian is still at Grigwallt and is a widow with 2 daughters Mary 10 and Elizabeth 8  HO107/2462 folio 6 pg 4
But, no sign of a Henry  :(

Hi Suz,
I have just seen your reply to my query - many thanks.
It looks as if this could be the Death entry for the Daniel that Osprey mentions below.
Sadly, not mine, as he was still alive in 1864   :( :(
I don't have a DOB, just the entry as father on Henry's Marriage Cert.
Thanks again for your help
John

Hi Osprey,
Just seen your reply to my query- many thanks.
It certainly looks as if this is the same Daniel as the Death Entry for 1837 from Suz.
My Daniel Jackson was still alive at the time of his son Henry's Marriage - 18th October 1864 Swansea.
Sadly it seems this is a different family  :( :(
Regards,
John

Could you give any further details from marriage cert?
Henry's occupation?
Witnesses? Sometmes they were related ?

Did Henry marry Ann?
Was he a Mason?

May help us track daniel down

Hi Suz,
Yes, here are the Marriage Details -

18 October 1864 Parish Church, Swansea.
Henry Jackson, OFA, Mariner, of Swan Street. Father- Daniel Jackson, Master Mariner.
Ann M.L. Saker, Minor, Swan Street, Father Horatio Saker, Comedian.
Witnesses - John Scoutlebury and Annie Williams.

There is a possibility that we will not be able to locate them as they are shown on the US Census 1880 as born Nova Scotia.

It was only by luck that I discovered their Marriage and first children in Swansea !!!!!!
Thought maybe Henry and Daniel could have been from Wales.
Annie M. Jackson and their first two boys appear on the 1871 Swansea Census.

We could be looking for events that occurred in Canada - my apologies if this is the case.

Thanks again,

John.

just a couple of thoughts -

even if a father isn't shown as being deceased on a marriage certificate, it doesn't mean he is still alive. If the minister/person officiating at the marriage didn't ask if he was still alive, he wouldn't know and so would not record that fact.

Swansea is a port and someone marrying there isn't necessarily Welsh. It was a centre of the copper industry, tinplate industry and other things metallurgical. The ships that brought copper in, took coal out. Although the trade with Somerset, Devon and Cornwall was well established, a sailor could have come from more or less anywhere. Swansea was known for its links with South  America, especially the route around Cape Horn. Now, with a name like Jackson, I doubt that you're dealing with someone from S. America, but I also doubt that you're dealing with someone born in Wales. There are very few Jacksons on the census of Wales at this time, and certainly not a Henry who fits and definitely not one with a father Daniel. There is one Henry in Swansea whose age is a few years out and whose mother is a widow, but at 16 in 1851, he's a block maker so unlikely to be your man.

Do you know what the initials after Henry's name mean?

Don't think I've come across comedian as a father's occupation before!

Hi Osprey,
Thank you for your comments on this one - I  now think it is probable that both Henry and Daniel could have been born in Nova Scotia.
The initials OFA, as used on the Marriage Certificate, would be for ' of full age'.
I will now be looking for Henry and Daniel Jackson in Canada.
Thanking you for your assistance,
Regards,
John
