Mer Service
« on: Monday 29 November 04 09:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello Does any one have an idea what this could mean, It on a 1871 Census return the Women in question say "engineers widow Mer Service"

Has it something to do with Merchant seamen? ie Merchant Navy?

Thanks in anticipation Shirleyannmarie

Almost certainly the Merchant Navy. This description might indicate that she was receiving a widow's pension.
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

Difficult and only possible in person. Many of these records are lodged in the Guildhall Library, London. You have to go in person.
