A LOST BROUGHTON / WALKER *HELP PLEASE*
« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 02:56 BST (UK) »
Could anyone out there help me please ?

***James Broughton    *aka*    James Walker***      ???

He is believed to have been born in Marylebone, Middlesex on 16 October 1893. Possibly out of wedlock to Elizabeth Mary Walker (known as Mary).

Elizabeth Mary Walker is thought to have stayed ewith her sister Ellen Walker Rawson in Lambeth, Surrey, England at some time around the turn of the century.

Ellen Walker Rawson and Elizabeth Mary Walker are thought to possibly be the daughetrs of Alfred Walker and Sophia Johns.

Elizabeth Mary Walker and Baby James Walker left for AUSTRALIA some time around the turn of the century.

There must have been a marriage either in England or Australia between Elizabeth Mary Walker and John Broughton. I can find no proof of this.

All of this is very fuzzy, but I know that these two raised children together. James born in 1928, Doris born in 1926, Norman in 1928, Ernest John in 1931, and Roydon in 1934.. Children were born in Ceduna, South Australia.

John and James were Mariners.

The James born in 1928 was brought up as James Broughton, but and Aunt told him he was really James Walker.

So many questions, Can anyone help me ??     Thank You, Pam (in Indiana)

Hi

Quick search of SA BDM  births to 1928 - births not to parents you have named in your post :(

BROUGHTON  Doris Hope  15 Jan 1926  Father James BROUGHTON  Mother  Eva Evelyn SMITH born Denial Bay  Ref  Fli 167A/290

BROUGHTON James  8 Apr 1928  Father James BROUGHTON  Mother  Evelyn Edith  SMITH  born Ceduna Ref Fli 210A/155

I can't find the birth of a Norman BROUGHTON IN 1928.  Two children in 1928 ????  Birth registrations after 1928 not available.

These two birth registrations are the only BROUGHTON births for 1926 and 1928 at Ceduna.

Pam could these birth registrations relate to the son James BROUGHTON  b. 1893 Middlesex as there is a marriage registration on 6 Jun 1925 for

BROUGHTON  James Single 33 Father John BROUGHTON to Evelyn Edith SMITH Single 23 Father Herbert Edis SMITH 6 Jun 1925 at St Michael's Church, Murat Bay  Ref Fli 303/962

I would have thought Elizabeth Mary would be too old to be bearing chn in 1934 - first child in 1893?

Cheers

Jim is this the correct family that Pam is looking for as the parents given do not match the births I found - unless of course it is the family of James BROUGHTON B. 1893 Middlesex.  Nothing on John BROUGHTON and Elizabeth Mary WALKER,

Cheers

Hullo Cando,

Yes !!    This is the family alright and we are both researching them.    What we are actually looking for is information on James WALKER from the time of his Birth at Queen Charlotte Hospital, St Marylebone, Middlesex, on 16 Oct 1893 to Elizabeth Mary WALKER, and his surname change from WALKER to BROUGHTON, until he married Evelyn Edith SMITH, in Ceduna, South Australia, in June 1924.    On his marriage certificate to Evelyn he gives his Father's name as John BROUGHTON, but NO Father is shown on his Birth Certificate, as he was born out of wedlock.

Well it is a good result.

Evelyn Edith BROUGHTON [Ev] died in 1990. Info taken from the following site.

http://www.saghs.org.au/    Search under NEWSPAPER DEATHS.

More information may be obtained - at a small cost.

I will have a look to see if I can see James death.
