Not sure about "months", but I also can't work out what it might say.  Always a bit difficult without the other samples of handwriting elsewhere on the certificate.

Isn't it a bit odd that there aren't any figures for how long s/he had suffered?

You could be right about "months" ... since chronic means it's been a lasting condition anyway.

I can't spot Joseph DICKSON on the 1901 census either (image from death cert was 1898 in Whitehaven, Cumberland).

Myositis  inflammation of the muscles

Perhaps they didn't know how many days it was and the family just said "days".  They may not have been able to afford a doctor.

Thanks ... myositis is a possibility (I thought it was a flower!)

On the doctor point, someone must have come up with those fancy words.  I doubt it was the son who registered the death that thought them up - he thought his mam was 69 when she was really about 81.

It seems clear that it's 'Months'.  There's no 'y' - that's the top of the 'l' from the 'Apoplexy' in the line below.

'Months' also fits in with the normal format of death certs i.e. that the disease or diseases were specified with, after each disease, the length of time it had been present.  Thus: Chronic Nephritis - months; Apoplexy - days.  Yes, unusual not to have more precision - but at least the medico was consistent!
