« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 17:22 BST (UK) »
hi wonder if anyone can help i am searching for my great grandfather pre 1891.his name was john henry phillips and on 1891/1901 census it says he was born in milverton in 1859,unfortunatelly i cannot find a birth certificate for him.
i have his marriage certificate he married mary ann palmer on 29 sep 1888 at the parish of the holy trinity, bridgewater.it states his age as 29,labourer,residing at silver street bridgewater.father is named as henry phillips deceased.i cannot find any trace of him or his father before his marriage and the only phillips in milverton in 1861 are henry john ,mother mary and grandfather robert.henry was born in 1854 and on later census is in wales married to a dorcas.
any info would be greatly appreciated thanks andy

Hi Andy  :)

Welcome to RootsChat  8)

I can see a Henry J Phillips born Milverton on the 1861, but he's a little older than expected:

RG9/1609 94 9
Milverton, Somerset

Robert Phillips, head, wid, 60, Ag lab, b. Somerset Thorn St Margaret
Mary, dau, unm, 25, Glove Maker (silk), b. Milverton
Henry J, grandson, 5, scholar, b. do.

Not yours

Will have a look around to see if I can find a better match  :)

Well, above wasn't good at all - sorry  ::) The Henry J born ca. 1855 is to be found in Wales on later census so I think we can discount him.

Do you have the marriage cert for John and Mary? Does it give a father's name?

I suppose she was Mary Ann Palmer, marriage Sep 1888 Bridgwater 5c 540?

Blimey - it's even worse than I thought then  :o Sorry, Andy !!

Arranroots has found a possible candidate family - why don't you post them, Arranroots?  ??? :D

Only thing is why would he give his birthplace as Milverton on later census?  :P

Hello both

Tati - I am sure the Rootschat fairies have been playing tricks on you!

I wonder if you have considered the birth of John Henry Phillips THORNE Sep 1858 Wellington Somerset (Milverton registers as Wellington) Ref 5c 378

It could be that John was illegitimate and took his father's name later in life: that would explain why he can't be found on other censuses.

Let me know if you want help tracing this chap & I will set our resident expert Tati on the job!

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)
