Moorman Family - Isle of Wight
« on: Tuesday 03 April 07 20:12 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have lots of dots but need help to join them up.

I have a marriage cert for my gr.gr.gr.mother Emily Moorman to Henry Oliver dated 24th June 1872.

Her father was George Moorman (a sawyer) and her address at the time was Elm Grove. I have census returns showing the family but I can't find a birth record for Emily or a marriage record for her parents George and Elizabeth.

There are two possible marriages for George (Emma Phillips + Charlotte Morey) but I see them as families elswhere on the census.

I'm going in circles here and getting a bit dizzy!

Ronnie,

Where does Emily say she was born?  When was Henry born?  And where can they be found after marriage?

Trying an attack on several fronts here  ;)

Little Nell,

Henry was born c.1841 - he says he is 29 on the marriage cert. which would make it 1843 but I have his military record which gives me 1841. He was well over the minimum age joining up so I took his d.o.b. at face value.

Although he was stationed in Parkhurst (Sergt. 103rd Regt.) at the time of his wedding, he was originally from Surrey, father also Henry Oliver, a Shipwright. One of the witnesses was George Oliver whom I believe to be his younger brother (mentioned on his service record).

I could attach a scan of the complete cert but I was worried about copyright -or does that apply?

Thanks

Little Nell,

I'm not sure of the timeline but Henry was sent to Ireland shortly after the wedding. Their first child Emily Elizabeth was born in Naas, Co.Kildare in 1874 and they remained in Ireland thereafter.

I've found Emily on the 1871 and 1861 census - age consistent with birth in 1853 or so.  There is a birth registered on the Isle of Wight for a female child in 1854 (could be correct if she was born late in the year), mother's maiden name Philips !  There was also apparently a male child registered then as well, same reference for the certificate, same mother's maiden surname.  But I see entries for deaths in the same year, no names but consecutive references, children only 1 hour and 2 hours old  :'(

I've tried a few variations for the spelling, but still cannot come up with any of the children shown in 1861.  ???

Nell,

I saw the reference to those children in 1854, there were three! , but Phillips ties in with a marriage between George Moorman and Emma Phillips. I can find George and Emma in the census so they are not mine. I also found Moorman births referring to Morey which relate I presume to George and Charlotte and they're not mine either.

My George and Elizabeth must have sneaked onto the island when no-one was looking!
