Tischler Leslie
« on: Thursday 05 April 07 04:27 BST (UK) »
I am looking for descendants of Axel and Joan TISCHLER who lived in Aberdeen in the early 1900s.  One address was 54 Jasmine Terrace.  Another later one in 1945 was 44 St Andrews St.  Axel died during WW1 but I can find no record.  Joans maiden name was KYLE.  Children included, Annie Slessor Kyle TISCHLER, Maria Faines TISCHLER, Hilda (who married a Leslie and lived at 72 Wales St), John and Alexander who died in WW2.

First of all Welcome to Rootschat,

What in particular are you looking for, Census returns ? BMD records or are you trying to find just descendants of your Tischler family?

Best wishes

Mo

P.S.  Did a quick search and there are 9 entries for deaths in Aberdeen, all post 1900

Hi Mo
that was quick.  I am trying to track down living relatives mainly.
I have some records gained from the Archives online - Joan and Axel marriage, Annie death in 1918, Maria death 1945, John Tischler birth 1902, and there is an Ida Tischler (who does not seem to be related) death certificate 1939.

Why on earth I have found myself in Aberdeen is going to be a good story when I find out I am sure!
My great grandfather (paternal line) was John JAANUS (b. 1873). He was probably born in the Aland Isles in a village called Bano.  He came to Adelaide in South Australia, had one child and then disappeared.  I have recently found him as John (Jack) Janus in a country town called Narrandera in New South Wales.  He died in 1927.  On his WW1 service records he says his sister in law is his next of Kin and her name is Joan Tischler of 44 St Andrew St Aberdeen.  You can see the records online at www.naa.gov.au (the australian national archives).

Any help is most welcome as I am flying in the dark here.

Do you know the story behind his dying in WW1?  With such a German name, he might have been rounded up as an enemy alien, and interned.   Was he in any armed services?

Tischler means cabinet-maker, if you didn't already know.

Thanks for that.  I have a clipping from when he died accidentally in 1927 when a team of horses got away from him.  It reads in part:
"He had a brother who was living in Scotland, and who served with the British Navy, and who was killed while minesweeping, and a sister in law who is resident in Aberdeen Scotland."
Unfortunately I can find no record of this online.

My mind can't seem to get around the idea that his brother is Axel TISCHLER and he is John JANUS (JAANUS).  The only thing that seems to fit there is a Baltic/Scandinavian origin perhaps.

On the marriage certificate of Axel to Joan it says that Axels father is Henri TISCHLER (deceased) formerly merchant service and mother Mary Tischler nee RAINES.  Yet in Johns service records (www.naa.gov.au) in 1917 he is changing his NOK from his father (no name or address) to his sister in law.

Phew!

There is a death entry for their son Axel who died in WW2 at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission site:
www.cwgc.org

I'm wondering if the father perhaps died after WW1, as mine sweeping would have likely continued for some time after the war.  It could have been somewhere else in the world.  I suppose you have done the obvious thing, which is to ask the Royal Navy if they have any record of him.  I also wonder if this task could have been carried out by hired civilians.  And, lastly, I wonder if the family stories got mixed up, and it was the son that they were referring to as dying in the war.

The certificates I have show a death of a child aged 3 in August 1918 and Joan is a widow by then, so that fits with the newspaper article.  The latest relative I can find is Hilda Leslie living at 72 Wales St, and no Tischlers in a google search. Newspaper article attached.

I don't think there is anything further that I can add to what I have already said.  Good luck!
