Sorry to hear about your hard drive, if you get it back please could you do a look up for Joseph McDonald (Bricklayer), who would have been circa 31 in 1851.  He should be in one of the following areas :-

Hulme
Manchester Ancoats
Manchester London Road
Manchester St george
Salford

Had a look for you but only came across one family of mcdonalds in manchester st george they were a William Mcdonald/Harriet
