Troqueer place name
« on: Friday 06 April 07 15:49 BST (UK) »
Could anyone suggest where or what 'Billbow' was as mentioned in the 1771 OPR ?

I have looked at old-maps.co.uk but with no success.

Thanks

Bill

I was told at the Archives in Dumfries that Billbow was near Rochell Road and Church Street at Maxwelltown in the early 1800s.

If you select this map from the National Library of Scotland site

http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/towns.cfm?id=333

and zoom in and pan around until you find Maxwelltown, you'll find Church Street and Rochell Road just south of the old bridge.

I couldn't find Billbow when I looked but I might not have looked in the right place. it lists all of the houseowners at the time (circa 1819)

There might be other maps on the NLS site as well that might be of interest.

 :D

I'd forgotten about it until today  :(

I used it a few years back to find the farm that my ancestors had 1800 - 1815 in New Galloway.

Wonderful old maps for the whole of Scotland - aren't we lucky  :)

A Google for:
Troqueer + Bilbow
(just one 'l')
gets a couple of hits.

This site may be of interest to you.  They have an exhibition on at the moment on Maxwelltown.  They have a lot of photos of that area.
