New Malton

My great-grandfather, William HAGUE, is believed to have been b approx 1829 in New Malton, which I now understand (thanks, Newfy!) to be in the North Riding. By reason of his trade (fellmonger) he then moved around the country quite a lot, and m in South Wales. But I have nothing further on his origins, other than that the m/c shows his father (John) to have been a sailor (decd by 1856).

Do any of you kind folk have access to any likely registers? Which Record Office and/or FHS best covers New Malton, please? Or can you suggest other possible sources of info?

There is William's baptism on familysearch.org (IGI):

Christened 28 May 1828 St Leonards New Malton, parents John Hague & Elizabeth.

Siblings christened at St leonards New Malton (there may be more outside New Malton, St Leonards of course)-

Ann 28 Jan 1824
James 3 Jun 1818
Elizabeth 22 May 1816
Jane 29 Mar 1826
Mary 15 Aug 1832

There is a  marriage of a John Hague to Elizabeth Fox in St Michael New Malton, 28 Jun 1815 which fits quite nicely with the birth of their first child a year later.

My very belated thanks, and sincere apologies, to Shirl and Nutty for these two responses.
Have now managed to find a little more info at the Borthwick record office on York Univ campus.
Also I have visited Malton, where the two streets shown on censuses still exist, although houses probably long gone (even if I knew which ones they were).

if your going to look through the records of malton and new malton get both st leonards and st micheals. i found my family used both churches

Yep, I had the same prob with switching between parishes. I wasn't helped by the fact that St Leonard's is now an RC church, having been gifted by CofE some years ago. Very few headstones now left standing in the charchyard too.

do you know malton well ? im visiting there next month and was hoping to look around the graves to find some of mine.

I didn't visit Old Malton, but if you are thinking of New Malton (actually 800 years old!) then I'm not sure how much the two prinicipal churches will help you. There are a few, a very few, headstones at St Leonard's, the rest having been cleared, and as usual, they are almost impossible to read. Unless your family are sufficiently exalted to have one of the wall plaques inside the church (mine aren't) you won't find anything at St Michael's. But streetmap shows two cemeteries, presumably civil, which might reveal something. I din't get there this time.

Have you visited the Borthwick Institute in York? It's on the university campus and a pig to find, but they have some very useful records.

i went through the parish records for both churches and found about 30 pages of marriages and births for the families i was looking for but only 1 page of burials. soi dont know what they woud have been doing.
