Passenger list look up please
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 14:24 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace some ancestors. I know that Charles Mcewan Mclaren (born in Scotland 1877) married Mary Bennetts(born in cornwall 1875) in Vancouver on the 25th of May 1907. They returned a short while later. Am not sure why they went out there or how long they were there. They met in Barrow in furness where they were living in 1901 Mary was living at home in Barrow with her parents. Charles was a boarder in Barrow. Charles was born in Scotland  his father was Alexander Mclaren and his mother was Jessie mclaren. A quick look on ancestry suggests that they may have gone to Canada maybe this is why Charles went.
Can anyone help me further please?

Welcome to RootsChat!

A search of "Ancestors on Board", found a Charles Mclaren, aged 26, arriving in Quebec, Canada in 1907 from Glasgow.

Not sure if he is yours, as the age is out by 4 years.

I cannot find a Mary Bennetts that arrived in Canada before 1907 who is the correct age.

If you do know the year they arrived, you can search for free at the National Archives Canada site. Unfortunately, they are not transcribed.

Also, I checked the British Columbia Archives, and could not find their marriage.

Are you sure it was Vancouver in Canada? Could it have been Vancouver Washington, U.S.A.?

Have got the marriage certificate out again and it is definately the City of Vancouver in the county of Vancouver Province of now it could be 73.6 or 13.6.

I didn't see the marriage in Vancouver either- tried searching under McLaren, Charles M?, etc. and nothing even close. Am puzzled by 'Province of 73.6 or 13.6'- should it not say British columbia or B.C.?

Hi you can tell I am new to this!! on closer inspection, it is very ornate handwriting!! it could be B.C

so wording would be
I hereby certify that on the 25th day of may 1907 the rite of holy matrimony was solemnized by me, by authority of license between charles McLaren of the city of Vancouver in the county of vancouver Province of B.C dominion of canada and Mary E Bennetts of the city of Vancouver in the county of Vancouver province of B.C and Dominion aforesaid

Yes, B.C. makes more sense than numbers. From the wording "the rite of holy matrimony" it sounds like a church wedding. Is the church listed? The bride and groom both seem to be resident in Vancouver but did the marriage actually take place there? The Vancouver records online are quite good and it's surprising that this marriage is missing.

No it is witnessed in the presence of E L Barwick and A H Evans The officiating minister was A E Hetherington.

As I understand it Marys departure fron England was not one of approval from parents!!

Hi Sarah,

It looks like your ancestor arrived aboard the "SICILIAN" in 1907 from Glasgow to Quebec.  On the Library & Archives of Canada website there are six passenger lists that you can go through to find the actual entry.

Good Luck,

Nancy
Attwater - Kent & London England (All spelling variations)
Goodwin - Kent & London England
Cronin - Ontario & Ireland
Clancy - Peter Robinson Expedition - Ontario, Canada & Rockmills, Cork, Ireland
Kenneally - Ontario, Canada & Ireland
Redmond - Ontario, Canada & Ireland
Shepley - Ontario, Canada & Lancashire, England
