YORK 62 Monkgate 1889- 1891
« on: Tuesday 30 November 04 16:57 GMT (UK) »
Could anyone kindly do a look up for this address please.

My Great Grandmother got married from here in June 1889, Her
name was Ellen McCawliff.

There are so many variations of this name on her marriage certificate, that I would like to verify the way it was spelt on a
official document ie census. poll book etc.

The head of the house should be Morris (Maurice) McCawlif.

This would really help me get started on this side of the family

Thank you in anticipation

Hi,

At 62 Monkgate in 1891 is the family of Adolphus E. Roberts, a 40 year old schoolmaster born in Scarborough. The McCawliff family must have moved on by then, though I have not been able to find a Maurice or Morris McCawliff (or anything similar) in the 1891 index  :-\ I also had ancestors living in York, and one branch of the family lived in Monkgate, though a bit earlier in the 19th century.

Jenie

PS The most common spelling on the census indexes seems to be Mcauliffe, and there are 2 Maurices in London on the 1871 census and one in Guernsey and also a Morris in Glamorgan, Wales in 1891.

I did find this family on the 1881 index:

Name  Relation Marital Status Gender Age Birthplace Occupation Disability
John MC AULIFFE   Head   M   Male   48   Ireland   General Labourer
Ellen MC AULIFFE   Wife   M   Female   46   Ireland
Dennis MC AULIFFE   Son   U   Male   18   St Heliers, Jersey, Channel Islands   Coach Painter
Ellen MC AULIFFE   Daur   U   Female   16   St Heliers, Jersey, Channel Islands   Dressmaker

Source Information:
  Dwelling   38 Apsley Road
Census Place St Helier, Jersey, Channel Islands
  Family History Library Film   1342348
  Public Records Office Reference   RG11
  Piece / Folio   5612 / 70
  Page Number   17

Even though the father's name is different, it could be worth looking into as this was the only Ellen I have managed to find of the right age (as per your other post).

Jenie,

Thank you so ve ry much for this information...I am almost certain that the family could be mine.

I had thought that they could be Irish...with a name like
MCauliffe, and I know there was quite an influx of Irish people
to York at one time.....will go from there...where too, not sure,
But thank you once agin for your trouble.
