Local Newspapers 1902
« on: Saturday 14 April 07 22:05 BST (UK) »
Hi,

Can anyone tell me the name of the local newspaper in circulation around 1902 in the Pendeen/St just area of Cornwall please.

I want to look at Obituaries mostly.

Hi Ambers,

I would imagine that the West Briton would have covered that area.

The only other newspapers I remember from my Cornish childhood were the Western Morning News and the Falmouth Packet.

But they were both more full county rather than specific to the St Just area.

Thanks Osprey :)

It's a shame they can't do  look-ups, paid or otherwise :( .....that's another place to visit should I ever get to Cornwall.

There is also the Colindale Newpsper Library in NW London.

My mum visited there recently to look up the "tragic death" of her grandfather which was apparently reported in the West Briton in 1920, but couldn't find the article!  :(

Hi Ambers,

The Cornish Studies Centre in Redruth, Cornwall, hold copies of the West Briton on fiche from 1810.  It may be worth emailing them though to see if they could tell you what papers covered the St Just area, just in case there's a more localised paper to the area.

If you go onto:
http://www.chycor.co.uk/general/red-lib/page3.htm
it gives a list of papers held at the Centre.

I live just up the road from the Centre, so if you want me to look anything up just give me a shout.  ;)

Hi Bex,

That is really kind of you to offer....big, big hugs and thanks.

I will give them a ring to-morrow....

I do envy you living so close to the centre, I would be spending my days there fascinated by it all 8)

I gave the the Library a ring this morning.

They suggested the Cornishman ( twice weekly paper), might carry a Funeral report as he was a miner :D

As I have the death date, they can search for a couple of weeks around that time....and send a copy of the article if one is found ;D

Fingers crossed, as I am fast running out of ideas with this side of the family...in fact this is the last one :-[
