Helen Cooper born 1811 Maybole?
« on: Sunday 15 April 07 14:18 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to obtain birth details for Helen Cooper apparently born in Maybole, Ayrshire in 1811 according to census reports.  She married Alexander Hutchison in Auchtergaven in 1837 and had at least 4 children.  I have tried SP and IGI but cannot find any birth details on her.

Can anyone help?

Kind regards

Hi Aye Right

Have you managed to find Helen's DC? This at least would let you confirm her parents' names and whilst her birth/christening entry doesn't seem to show on the OPRs, you might be able to find some of her siblings.

There are only two Cooper births showing in Maybole on IGI, actual extracts:

1. Parents Samuel Cooper and Prudence McFarlane :ELIZABETH JANE COOPER  - Christening: 19 JUN 1819 Maybole, Ayr, Scotland
2. Parents John Cooper and Helen Long: JANE COOPER Birth: 27 OCT 1804 Maybole, Ayr, Scotland

Regards.

Looking at Helen's 1851 census entry with her children, parents John C and Helen Long are looking good possibilities!

Thanks for replying Monica - I don't have a death cert either so decided to use my free SP credits courtesy of the Sunday Mail to view some entries that I had previously searched for - and I think she may have died in Govan Poorhouse in June 1881 but the certificate says she was single and no parents were recorded - I find this strange as at least 2 sons are still living in the Govan area at the time.

Aye Right, not sure if you have the right death entry for Helen. I think this looks like her with her two sons in the 1881 Census:

Alex Hutchison    42, Bathkeeper (Unemployed), b. Glasgow
Eliza Hutchison 10, niece, b. Glasgow
Helen Hutchison 72, (down as wife but surely mother!), b. Maybole
John Hutchison    37, Labourer In Locomotive Works, b. Stanley, Perthshire

Address: 10 Gilmour St, Glasgow Hutchesontown

...So unless something went horribly wrong between April and June that year, Helen's DC is still likely to be found?

Regards.

If you have any more Sunday Mail units left  ;)- how about looking at this death entry:

1889   COOPER   ELLEN       HUTCHISON   F   78   HUTCHESONTOWN   GLASGOW CITY/LANARK   644/11 0013

Thanks Mo  :) That then ties up with the OPR entry for a sister Jane in 1804 to those parents.
