There was another thread recently on this question:
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=15010.0  ("What does ND mean ?")

I quoted something I found on a rootsweb forum:

Quote
After much discussion of whether it meant "Non Domestic", (or possibly even " Non Drinker" !), one correspondent added:

"I've been following this correspondence and have just found one of my clan
on the 1901 Knowle/Bedminster census, an old man of 82 described as
Gardener (not domestic), ie spelt out in full."

Another correspondent added:
"look at the image and you wil see these annotations for statistical pruposes
are in another handwriting

the census was made to provide statistics for governanve purposes

domestic = employed by a family

nd or not domestic means a coachman in a livery stables (for hire like a taxi)

BTW stage driver = omnibus driver
also a coachman"

I have a Gardener, not domestic, in the 1901 census and the family knows that he worked for Cadburys so I have always thought that it meant a gardener employed by a business, rather than a private household.  With all the work being done by hand, there must have been huge numbers of gardeners employed by businesses to keep their premises looking tidy.
Always interesting to find out how our ancestors spent their days!
