Non Domestic Gardner??
« on: Wednesday 01 December 04 00:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

I think I must be getting slow - but what does a non domestic Gardner do?  ???

Work for the council or what??

Being a townie - not sure what went on in the country - particularly in 1901 ;D ;D

Cheers
Keith

This is a guess, but could it just be a gardener that didn't live in the household?

Hi Keith,
I have the same on the 1901 census.  The son of the house is described as 'Gardener, not domestic'.  I don't know if he was maybe a garden designer, but could also just work for the local council.  As they were quite comfortably placed I somehow don't think he was working for the council!

Cheers,

Are we into the era of park gardeners here? - lines of bedding plants - lobelia, salvia, alyssum, marigolds and geraniums?   I can't think what else 'not domestic' for a gardener would mean.

I am going to take a stab at this one.  I have a non-domestic gardener.  In the census in 1871 it has his place of work as George Earle Cement Manufacturer, Lineaus Street, Hull.  I think he would have worked as a gardener for a business not a home as a servant. Cannot imagine he had much to do but then again they would not have had a gas powered lawn mower. ;D
