Hertfordshire Place Name?
« on: Tuesday 17 April 07 19:59 BST (UK) »
Hello Listers

Have a Hertfordshire birth place named ''Whitewell'' found in Luton Census in 1881 --- does such a place exist?  If it does, which parish would it come under?

I am looking for a Lavinia born about 1837/8ish who later married a Charles J ROSSON and I cant find their marriage certificate  :-[

Hi Cathy,

In 1871 it says Whitwell ... perhaps this one? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitwell,_Hertfordshire

The most likely place is in St Pauls Walden which is just east of Luton (which is Bedfordshire).  This variously recorded as Whitwell or Whitewell.  If you go back further there was another one at Coleshill which despite being close to Amersham and completely surrounded by Buckinghamshire was actually part of Hertfordshire

Think I can spot a likely candidate in 1851:

Lavenia Bland, living in Luton and born Whitewell Herts  ;)

Marriage
Lavinia Bland
June 1854  3b 635

Will check if I see Mr Rosson with same reference  :)

YES : Charles Rosson - reference not 100% easy to read but I think it's a match

Do you want Lavenia's 1851 details, Cathy?
