George Lister & daughter Kate
« on: Wednesday 18 April 07 19:25 BST (UK) »
I recently received a copy of my grandfathers marriage cert,
John Edward Bacon, 21 yrs. m. 1904, Keighley, Kate Lister, 21 yrs. resident, 263 Calversyke Hill, Keighley, her fathers name is given as George Lister"washer at worsted mill"
My problem, in the 1891 & 1901 census i cannot find a George & Kate that match the info on the cert, i can get right b.date, but wrong father, theres a possible Kate on 1891 Ancestry with a yellow triangle giving the name Bowers ?, in 1901 theres a possible Kate, mother Catherine P, but no father, has any one any suggestions?
I did post on the Yorks lookup, but no result so far, so i thought i would throw it open.

HI, They did not always give the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth. It seems very convenient that they are both 21yrs!!

Hi Bodger,

I was thinking exactly the same thing - I expect you've looked at the Lister family with George and Charity as parents.  Daughter Kate is 3 in 1891, (RG12/3537 fol.52 p.11), 13 in 1901, and could possibly be your Kate.  Can't see any others likely in either census.

My husband's grandmother said she was 21 on her marriage cert and was only 17.....

Incidentally, the Catherine P Lister in Scarborough with daughter Kate was in 1881 Wakefield, called Kate Lister married to a Wm, not George

Hi Bodger,

Who were the witnesses on the marriage certificate?  It may hold a clue.

I always thought when you got marrried that you had to prove your age, ie birth cert., but , if as you say that the age could be adjusted, then George & Charity, look a good possibility,. The witnesses were Matthew & Charlotte Carr, sorry i have no idea where or what connection they had.
Thank you for your ideas and responses. bodger

Hi Bodger,

This is going to be a bit hard to explain but I think Ecneps has the right George and Kate (mother Charity) on the 1891 census.

1) there is an Eliza Cartwright, daughter living with them which is more than likely Charity`s daughter  from an earlier marriage. (bear with me on this!)

2) There is no Calversyke Hill listed on the 1901 street index for Keighley on my discs.  However, looking back to the 1891 West Lane, Keighley suddenly becomes Calversyke Hill around the number 257 ish (sorry haven`t got this in the computer at the moment) and continues the numbering upwards as Calversyke Hill.

3) In the 1901 census Living at 263 West Lane, Keighley is a Herbert and Eliza Emmott aged 28 born Bradford. An Eliza Cartwright married Herbert Emmott in 1893 Keighley.

I suspect that your Kate married from her sisters home.

Hope this makes sense,

Regards,
Mo

Just had a quick look on Ancestry, 1901 & marriages, a Matthew Carr m. 2nd qtr. 1901, Bradford Charlotte Smallwood?, when was the 1901 cen. ? a Matthew is shown
in Bradford, age 25 at home with his mother & siblings.

Mo,  I understand what you are saying, and i will try and confirm details, the only thing not clear is the Eliza Cartwright, on Ancestry 1891, it only shows Eliza Lister
