I am looking for info on michael murphy and mary mccormish. Some of their children were born in Rathfryland , Down - ?the 1st around 1858. I am looking for marriage and birth information. By the 1881 census they were all in Cumberland, England. Cass

Hi Cass, Any information on Michael and Mary’s religious denomination and  their childrens names may help further researchers. I have looked across both surnames and your clue of  Rathfriland in only two websites. My instinct is to search for civil parish and then townlands, and finally church records unless an obvious priority.
The first of the websites is  Ros Davies Co Down.  freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~rosdavies
From it you glean Rathfriland or Rathfryland falls across two civil parishs Drumballyroney & Drumgath . She also supplies maps of each parish, showing townlands etc.  As Ros Davies surname lists contain a civil parish column, it is fairly quick to isolate ones interests. I started with mccormish and was directed to McCOMISH list. Here I was disappointed with my parish hunt and then I spotted a mary mccormish from another area,  could your Mary be the daughter of John McCOMISH . Kilcoo of Slievenalargy; husband of Mary McCartan ; father of Catherine bpt. 7 Apr 1833 (sponsors Bernard McCartan & Catty Morgan) & Mary bpt. 6 Jun 1834 etc etc  at Kilcoo Catholic church source If your Mary married in Rathfriland then again from the same source you can look up churches eg Rathfriland Catholic Church- St.Mary's.   This chapel , on the Newry Road, was built in 1832 ...PRONI, NLI & LDS have baptisms 1829-1880, marriages & burials 1837-1880 ; graveyard attached , gravestones UHF Vol 19 etc.  There are many Rathfryland Murphys findable under Drumgath but sadly no Michael. There are many churches in the area.

www.familysearch.com I managed to reduce the Murphys in Ireland to a Co Down and stopped after scanning quickly the first 1200 entries.  Then I went back and rechecked for a Michael Murphy b Rathfryland say 1820-1840, and was disappointed.

www.familysearch.com I managed to reduce the Murphys in Ireland to a Co Down and stopped after scanning quickly the first 1200 entries.  Then I went back and rechecked for a Michael Murphy b Rathfryland say 1820-1840, and was disappointed.

My quick search results look like this, but you will need to go back and look at each and its source carefully sometimes an individual submitter, I think at least one person is researching Murphy in Rathfryland and of course that might be you.

Hi, Michael and Mary's daughter Sarah Murphy was married in a Roman Catholic church in Workington, Cumberland so I assume they were catholics. Their children were Roase (1858) Elizabeth (1862) Peter (1865) Mary (1867) Sarah (1870) and Catherine (1873). The Mary McCormish that you found is the right age to be their mother. Cass

Public Record Office of Northern Ireland [PRONI] ie www.proni.gov.uk/ . I always look up each of their database eg freeholders, covenanters, etc.  At first you get areas which are invaluable, then they have a system of seeing further information. Search the site thoroughly always as they have so much.eg location of church registers ie births, marriages, burials, etc

Check out North of Ireland Family History Society (NIFHS) ie www.nifhs.org/ is useful. The latter now has something of even greater importance, they have a search engine  employed to produce genealogical searches and its good

Ulster Ancestry has grown large with over 1 million visitors counted, with its own message boards for areas eg Co Antrim and many free pages try it at www.ulsterancestry.com/

Have found the marriage for Michael and Mary in County Down May 4th or 7th 1856. Is this of any help in finding their marriage details eg parents? Cass
