FANNON Patrick...Co.Roscommon
« on: Saturday 21 April 07 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hi everone
I would love to be able to find my Patrick Fannon. I have him born c1824 in the Parish of Drum, in or near the town of Athlone. That info is on his discharge papers 8th Sept. 1862. He was in the 67th Regt. of Foot, serving in Nth America, Gibralta & the West Indies. Patrick came out to Oz c1865. He was married to Mary Lyons in c1855. I believe she was from Dublin? I have them with two sons prior to coming out to Oz. Martin b c1863 & Michael b c1865. Patrick came out as a Pentioner Guard 22nd Dec. per the "Vimiera"
I would love it if anyone has Parish records or knows where I can find them.
We will be going over to Ireland in July and hoping to rent a cottage in or near Athlone. I hope to be able to do some research while there but need to know where to start. We also intent to stay near Dublin. So can always go into the city to do the some research??? Any suggestions are most  welcome.
Regards
Karen

Karen,

Drum is in the parish of Athlone and microfilm copies of baptisms from 1798 to 1900 are available at The National Library in Kildare Street, Dublin.

You might also look at these websites for further info on Drum. The Heritage Centre in particular would be able to assist you in your search.

I would also recommend that you get a copy of John Grenham's book "Tracing you Irish Ancestors". It has a listing of all the major sources for Roscommon and the rest of the country. Make sure to bring it with you because you'll never know what leads you might turn up and it may help you decide where to go next.

Why not rent a cottage in Drum. How cool would that be?
