Ancestors Aboard ~ Findmypast.com
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 00:39 BST (UK) »
I have just done a search for an ancestor of mine in the passenger lists at Findmypast.com

I know I need to buy some units to continue further: 5 units for the transcript, 30 units for the actual image.

I am not entirely certain that this is "my man" so would prefer to buy the transcript at this stage. However, can anyone tell me whether the transcript would contain details of his family travelling with him? - I am expecting to see a wife and approx 4 children.

Thank you.

Hi Lloydy

Looking at the sample transcript on their website, it appears they do.

I can't help on whether the transcript shows the rest of the family as the only time I've used it was for a single traveller. However I must warn you that my transcript showed her occupation as "Nurse" - the original clearly, and correctly, stated she was a nun!

Thanks Bren.....I did realise that there was a sample transcript on the site, after I'd posted my request, but forgot to amend it :-[ :-[

Thanks Tim....Yes, there were errors in transcriptions but I'll be able to tell by his children's names whether I've got the right family. His eldest son was Adolphus...quite unusual.

Hi LLoydy

Not knowing where your folks were travelling to - just to mention searching ancestry.com US immigration is free until the end of April (the link is on a thread somewhere that I cannot find at the minute). I found someone on findmypast & then confirmed it and got the details from the US data ;D

If your ancestors were traveling to Canada you might find this rootschat thread to be helpful.

Hi there,

When I printed off the transcript for my gr-grandfather, it also gave me the names of all the people with the same surname travelling on the ship. I know he came by himself, but there was actually 7 other people with the same last name, if that helps.

Karen
Gandley (but known as Stanley in Canada)- Ireland to Birmingham
Ball, Kempson & Franklin - Birmingham
Shorter - Surrey
Dyer - Devon
Dawkins - Co. Cork, Ireland
Heffernan - Ireland
Huck - Alsace, France
Reinhart - Baden, Germany
Bowman & Ellis - England
Etheridge - Gloucestershire

Who all came to Canada in a little row boat, clap clap, clap your hands!!

My question, which is sort of relevant is, having found a name of a person who could be my g .uncle, how do I prove it. If it is the right person, he was a single man travelling by himself, so no clues there. Would the shipping company give me an address of where he started from? This person travelled in 1911, when he would have been 31, so obviously dead by now.
