John and Charlotte SHAFT of Arundel
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 07:51 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me to identify the burial of John SHAFT in 1819, and probably also of his wife Charlotte in about 1797?

I believe they were married in 1755 in Arundel.

Any help much appreciated.

Kind regards

Philip Candy

Burials:

John Shaft, 11 June 1819, age 96, Arundel, St Nicholas, Ssx

Charlotte Shaft, 5 Nov 1797, age 61, Notes Mrs. Arundel St Nicholas, Ssx

You will find many such records for a small fee on http://www.familyhistoryonline.co.uk especially for Sussex and it is a website I highly recommend!

This is brilliant. Many thanks Kerry.

I don't suppose there's any sign of Dr John Henry Candy who died in August 1879 in Littlehampton, or his wife Mary Ann who died in the September Quarter of 1852?  Maybe the records only relate to the period prior to 1837?

In that case, is there any sign of Joseph SANDERS from Arundel, and his wife Elizabeth (nee Shaft)? They are the parents of Mary Ann Candy (above).

Thanks so much for your help.

Best wishes

Philip Candy

Hi Philip
If you go to the site that Kerry mentions you should be able to look them up yourself.   The fee is not enormous and you may find other links on there too.

Dear Andrea

Many thanks for your suggestion. I have been a subscriber to familyhistoryonline for several years, although my subscription has just expired in the last day or two and I have not yet purchased any additional credits.

I certainly don't expect Kerry or anyone else to pay for these lookups for me, but to the best of my knowledge the burial entries are derived from the National Burial Index. If people have this on CD, they can look it up for free, and it has the additional advantage of being searchable by location (i.ei, parish) as well as by date, which familyhistoryonline doesn't.   This, with the NBI it is possible to identify the most likely subjects for one's search.

Thanks again for the steer towards familyhistoryonline; I agree with you and Kerry that it is a great tool - even the Search function can be enormously helpful on its own especially if the name is uncommon.

Kind regards

Sorry.  As you were asking what dates the records covered I assumed you did not know of it.

Many thanks Ian

I'm thinking this could be the parents of the Joseph SANDERS I am looking for. I have estimated his date of birth at 1757. His wife Elizabeth (nee Shaft) was baptised in 1765. This couple look to be a full generation earlier than that.

I will do a bit more digging and if I manage to come up with more consluive date ranges, I'll be asking for your help again.

Warm regards and thanks again
