Help (Donnell, Newry)
« on: Monday 23 April 07 16:44 BST (UK) »
I'm after some advice on where to go next.

I have my G-G-G-Grandfather (Joseph Donnell, b.1813) in the 1841 UK census as being born in "Newry" (all later censuses give Ireland as his birth place).  Whilst I have lots of information on him after he left Ireland, details of his early life are a bit sketchy.

This is what I know (mostly anecdotal), that may be relevant to his early days;

- His parents were likely to have been Joseph and Mary (nee McCall),
- He had a provisions/corn/butter merchants business based in Dungarvan, Waterford with his brother-in-law, Ezra Appleby
- His uncle, James Donnell was a judge in the West Indies, and was drowned there with his wife during a storm,
- His sister married a Mr. Nelson,
- He was married, and all his children were baptised in Anglican churches.

Where would be the best place to look next, e.g. wills, burials, parish records etc.

Thanks in advance for any help...

Lee

I was excited to see what information you had as my Great Great Grandmother was Anne DONNELL b about 1813 (place ?). She married John NELSON, merchant, and had at least two children (sons). One son Joseph Donnell NELSONb 1831 Newry was my great grandfather who settled in Australia and died there He fathered 12 children.  If you think Anne was the sister of your ancestor I am happy to share information with you. I attach a copy of Joseph's marriage certificate where Ann DONNELL's name appears as his mother

Hello Wilsonwizzing (or should I say cousin),

I think this is one of those 'bingo' moments.

In the 1861 census (RG9/3005 F93 P14) I have my G-G-G-Grandparents Joseph Donnell and Ann (nee Appleby) living in Staleybridge near Manchester.  They had two visitors staying with them at the time:

John Nelson, Aged 68, Butter Merchant, born Ireland;
Ann Nelson, Aged 62, born Ireland.

Sounds like a match to me.

I'll send you my email address via private message....

Hi
I'm trying to trace my G G G Grandfather Joseph Donnell (1812-1887) and in particular where about in Ireland he was from. The 1851 census could say "Newry" but it's so hazy I'm not sure!

Also I can't find any mention anywhere of Joseph ,Anne or family on the 1871 census...did parts of the census maybe go missing?!

If anyone knows anything at all that would be brilliant! :)

Is your Joseph Donnell the same one as in this thread?
Perhaps if you give us details so we can the census records you've already found we might be able to help with information or advice.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi
Yes I think there is connection to the thread!
I've found Joseph and his wife Ann on the 41,51,61 and 81 census but just can't find them at all on the 71 census. I know they must be around Cheshire/Staleybridge area..they move to Tarvin sands in 75/76 when Joseph retires.
And I know Joseph had businesses in Waterford but seems to have a connection with Newry..and there's a possible mention of Newry as his birth place but I can't read it for sure!
Just not sure where to go next to find Joseph's birthplace..I know Ann is from Birmingham.

Any help greatly appreciated!

The 1851 census says "I" [Ireland] for Joseph's birthplace.

Easily found on Family Search in 1871- https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBFN-N2P
