Paisley- James Milton & Margaret Dow
« on: Tuesday 24 April 07 22:49 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I was hoping someone might know something that might allow me to progress further down the line.

I'm lookin for information on James Milton and Margaret Dow (parents of Robert Fleming Milton, m. 31/12/1847, d. 7/8/1891).

I know both james and margaret were dead before 7/8/1891 and the family originated from the county of Renfrew (from paisley and barrhead so far).

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Al

Hi Al,

I have quite a bit of Dow information. Can you tell me who Margaret Dow's parents were, and I will see if I have her amongst my files.

Hi Alan

This looks like the family, without father James showing, in the 1841 Census:

Margaret Dore (as transcribed), 45
Joseph Milton, 18
Robert Milton, 14
Margaret Milton, 10

Address: Dovesland, Paisley Low. Everyone showing as born in the County.

Regards.

Monica

Hey,

That looks like a strong possibility because the age of robert would much up about right and the other names are names that run in the family! That's great  ;D. Any suggestions on how you think I can progress this further?

Al

Alan

This looks like Robert and wife Jane in the 1851 Census:

Robert Milton    27, baker, b. Paisley
Jane Milton    20, warp winder, b. Paisley
Janet Curr    68, mother in law, warp winder, b. Paisley
Margaret Wylie    17, wife's cousin, b. Paisley
Jane Jamieson    50, lodger
James Whyte    23, lodger

Address: 81 Canal Street, Paisley High Church

There's no death entry showing for mother Margaret post 1855, so it will be hard to confirm her parents. I also couldn't easily see an entry for her in the 1851 Census index.

Regards.

Monica

The only entry coming up on IGI for a Margaret in her birth years in Renfrewshire is this submitted entry:

MARGARET DOW  Birth: 20 MAY 1794/ Christening:  04 JUN 1794  Greenock, Renfrew, Scotland
Parents: Father: JOHN DOW    Mother: JANET CAMPBELL

Hi,

That's really interesting! Gives me some more info to work with. Greenock? That is worth looking into. I think the birth date could be about right.

This may sound daft- I have just about figured out how to search the IGI but where is it you are getting some of your census info, because I am struggling to find anything and you seem to be able to find things no bother! hehe.

I was just checking the IGI for the birth of Jane Forrester (who married Robert Milton) and it shows her to be born in paisley and her parents were John Forrester and Agnes Wylie. The agnes wylie seems to contrast with the 1851 census but the surname wylie is shown to be jane's cousin surname, which is weird. Do you still think this is the correct family?
