Hi Jan

Re Elizabeth Bride - I agree - I think she was probably a Breed, possibly the Elizabeth baptised in Sutton in 1800 to Thomas and Lydia. Sutton and Wrestlingworth are only a mile apart. Can't see an obvious Southill connection though.

Perhaps the vicar was confused by the bride who was a Breed marrying a Bird.

Interesting that one of their daughters was Sophia.

Regards

David

Hi David
It was the Sophia that had me pondering connections and the 2 Sophia's living next to each other in Cockayne Hatley. The Elizabeth in Sutton looks interesting Lydia is a family name in later generations.

"Perhaps the vicar was confused by the bride who was a Breed marrying a Bird."
- well I certainly am :D

Re: James and Sophia marriage circa 1832.

Can't see a reference to this elsewhere so I'll pop this up.

There are three bann records for Cockayne Hatley for Sept 29th, Oct 2nd and Oct 9th, 1832, for a James Carver and a Sophia.

I took these notes on a visit to the Bedfordshire County Records Office.  At the time I could not read the surname of Sophia so I traced out the name in my notes.  It's only my rough copy of the original but it does seem a candidate for being 'Bird', perhaps somebody else could verify this to the original?

Hope this might help.

Neil.

Hi Neil
That is interesting - presumably they didn't actually marry for one reason or another? Not sure if Sophia Bird would rule out her actually being Breed - Bride is apparently a variation of Bird according to my Oxford book of Names; Breed isn't a variation of Bird but we've already got Brede/Bride so do think it is still a possibility. As you say the original entry needs checking.

Cockayne Hatley marriages post 1812 have not been extracted onto either the IGI or the BVRI. I suspect that a check of the parish register may turn up the marriage.

Hi everyone
I've now seen a copy of the original banns entry for James and Sophia. I'm pretty sure (the quality is poor) Sophia's surname is  Breed and her parish of residence Sutton. Which is looking good for Sophia Breed of Southill moving to Sutton to be with family - although no obvious link between the Breeds of Southill and those of Sutton beyond John and Elizabeth Bird (nee Breed) having a daughter Sophia who lives nextdoor to James and Sophia Carver!

Jan ;)

Elizabeth Breed of Sutton had a sister Mary who would have been of an age to be Sophia's mother - so was the Mary Breed of Sutton in service there when she gave birth to her illegitimate daughter? All rather hangs on the Mary Breed of Southill having died young or married. Have posted a separate lookup for that.

Hi  I am really interested in your posts re Bird'/Carvers.  My grandmother was Violet Williamson Bird, her mother was Martha Carver married to John Bird.

I am fairly new to all this but really hooked on the research.  I am just really looking through sites like Ancestry.com
I have found rootschat so helpful but would like to know where I can gleen further info like baptisms etc. just to make sure I am following the right person.

I did try to gain info from my mother before she died but she was only seven when Violet died and only seemed to remember the good times bless her.

Hi again Cazanne

Just linking this to Scott's Bird thread for further info for anyone following this thread

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,284535.0.html

As Beds is very well extracted on the IGI it is a very good starting point
This site allows you to search by parish

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/

Also worth searching here

http://www.bedfordshire.gov.uk/CommunityAndLiving/ArchivesAndRecordOffice/ArchivesAndRecordOffice.aspx

or emailing them if you want copies of original records they are very helpful

And then of course posting any queries on the Beds Look-up board ;D
