« on: Thursday 26 April 07 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hi
I have found that a John CATON was killed in WW1 but no other info is given on the link I found.
Can anyone tell me please how I can find out more info on this man, eg date of death and where buried etc
Many thanks
Pat

Hi

You don't explain the background to your reference to Irish war dead, or identify the link where you obtained your information.  Have you looked at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website? I have to say that I cannot see anyone who appears to have any obvious Irish links, but then an Irishman could have served in any British unit.

Hi Imber
I accessed one of the Irish Genealogy websites I found browsing on Rootschat. I cant remember the name of it. THere was a heading for Irish WW1 dead which gave only the name Joh n Caton. I believe that to find more you had to buy a CD of Irish war dead.

hi TriciaAnn,
is the link below the one you are looking for?
the only one who is definitely irish that I can see is from antrim in northern ireland.maybe when you click on the persons name you will recognise the names of parents or perhaps some other detail that sounds familiar to you.

Hello Pat,

I don't think it will be necessary for you to buy a CD to get information about Irishmen who fought in WWI.
I've sent you a PM re a guy who has a large amount of information about Irish War dead.

Chris.

Hi Anne
Thanks for the reference. Sadly that is not the link at which I found John Caton, so I think that I will give up
Many thanks anyway

Like some Johns here in Ireland he is also known as Jack.
CATON, JACK
Initials: J
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Sub-Lieutenant
Regiment/Service: Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve
Unit Text: Anson Bn. R.N. Div.
Age: 25
Date of Death: 27/03/1918
Additional information: Only son of John and Eliza Caton, of Abbeyview, Muckamore, Co. Antrim.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: I. A. 8.
Cemetery: MESNIL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION

He is on the CWGC site and in Irelands Memorial Records on page 28.
Naval records are very good and you have more chance of getting his records than if he was in the army.
lookup the PRO in Kew.
 Regards.
 Tom.

Thankyou very much indeed for your help. If he is the John then he is not any connection to me as my Catons come from County Cork
Very grateful for all the helpful replies
