marriage
« on: Friday 27 April 07 16:05 BST (UK) »
could anyone help me?  If a person was born after 1840 and wasn't registered could they still legally marry? didn't they need a copy of their birth certificate? ???

Am having real problems tracking down an entire family. There appears to be no birth registered but they do record some deaths (not all)

Its very frustrating :'(

No evidence of anything was required !

There are many reasons why a Birth wasnt apparently registered .... altho 'mandatory', it wasnt a 'fineable' offence until the mid-1870s

It may be mis-spelled, missed off a quarterly return and and and ....

Post up some names, dates and places - happy to try and help.

Hi newfy

thanks for that :)

I thought if i tried with the most unusual of the names it would be easier so here goes

I have a patience galley born 1844 shavington cheshire she appears on the 1851 census with her parents john and elizabeth but then she dies sometime befor 1861.

They have another patience in 1858 shavington cheshire but she dies in 1871 staffordshire, they did register her death.

There are quite a few children but I would have thought it would have been easier to find these girls because of their names.  I have tried various forms of spelling galley and spread the range over ten years but so far nothing :-[

so if you can come up with any ideas I would be  ;D very happy indeed ;D

Hi judy

thanks for that, I have been on there before the only problem is i really need a birth certificate so that i can trace her mothers maiden name ::) unfortunately have had no luck with her parents marriage which would have taken place around 1840 :(

Good idea to try the IGI - you can use the search fields to ask for all christening to named parents .....

beware 'submitted' records vs 'extracted' records tho.

Where have you looked for Civil Regn Births - the full GRO Indexes hosted by Ancestry, or FreeBMD (also a copy hosted on Ancestry called 'partial' BMDs)

Also some areas have transcribed their own 'pre-GRO quarterly submissions' - ie the original local entries from Church and Registry Office Records.

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/index.php

Try using wildcard searches on Ancestry / FreeBMD - or even omit the surname ...

and look for 'Female' - sometimes a name hadnt been chosen at Regn time ....

Will have a look too.. Cheers

Hi thor

Are you registered with Genes Reunited?

There are 2 people with a Patience Galley 1858 & 1844 someone called Julie & one called Marcus. If they are people you have not been in contact with & don't have a subscription let me know your email address & I will ask them to contact you direct.

I cant see any death registration in 1871!
