john holroyd 1801 kirkheaton? updated looking for thomas oldroyd 1786
« on: Sunday 29 April 07 15:21 BST (UK) »
hello
can anyone help with my search for john holroyd b1801.
i have tried before with no success to find a birth for this man.
on the 1841 census he is with his family ,wife mary and children mary ,martha, sarah, william and henry in lindley.on 1851 he states birthplace as kirkheaton.john married mary stocks in 1822 and i can follow line from then on.
by 1861 all the family except john who had died moved to upper edge ,elland and i have found 2 holroyd families living in that area on 41 and 51 census.
hit a brick wall and its getting on for a year searching now for this chap.
a couple of holroyds married holroyds and have traced these back to a simeon holroyd, wondering if he and john could be related.
thanks in advance hol

I've checked the Kirkheaton Baptisms 1800-12 and he's not there! Unfortunately, I haven't got the booklet pre 1800 - perhaps someone else may be able to look it up for you - your 1801 date may not be spot on if obtained from censuses.

I checked Almondbury as well - no luck.

Try looking under Oldroyd, Holdroyd, or indeed any other variation you can think of.

I have both in my family, separate lines, and the spelling changes from year to year almost.

hello
thank you both, have checked on oldroyd and different variations but nothing definate to go on.
have found a john born 1801 with brother simeon but he was christened at rastrick.seems a bit too far from kirkheaton.
on the 1841 and 51 john has a lodger named james holroyd b 1815 who was the son of a thomas holroyd i am wondering if this could be johns nephew and could find a link back there.
thanks for looking anyway. hol

Good one, Jon.

I've now checked the Kirkheaton PRs for Oldroyd and - wouldn't you know it! - there are now 3 possibles!

baptised 28.2.1802  John Oldroyd, son of Michael & Bathsheba  abode Lepton

12.9.1802  John Oldroyd, s/o Matthew (no mother's name given)  abode Lepton

22.9.1803  John Oldroyd, s/o John & Sarah  abode Lepton.

The children's names usually help in that the early ones are usually named after a grandparent but Sarah seems to be the only relevant name. it might be worth knowing that there are other Oldroyd children baptised to a Mathias and Maria.

Hello again rootschatters
I am yet again chancing my arm that someone on here can dig out some info for me. Iam still after all these years not certain that i have the correct john holroyd 1799 ish.
I am not even sure that the marriage of john and mary stocks is correct.
I am 100% sure of my 4x gt grandmother mary ann holroyd b1829 and am visiting kirkburton cemetary this weekend to finally lay some flowers on her grave thanks to kirkburton church.
I have posted about this family many times on here and it always seems to stop at poor old John Holroyd .
I have birth certs for all mary anns children ,all marriage certificates and her death certificate with son present at death so i know its correct but owd john is making me go mad, been on this side of family what seems forever
Ps had ancestry got nowhere currently with findmypast, anything you want let me know.
Lee

Hi

Are you looking at Kirkburton or Kirkheaton.

If Kirkheaton a lot of the early headstones have been removed.

Hi

Just had a look and could the John Holroyd you are looking for be the one born 1799 and died 1875 Huddersfield.

2 John Oldroyd's born 1798 both baptised Kirkheaton and place of birth is Heat which was short for Heaton which later became Kirkheaton.
John son of Richard & Dorothy Oldroyd was baptised 11 February 1798.
John son of Martha Oldroyd was baptised 17 June 1798
