Law/Winton
« on: Monday 30 April 07 16:28 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help me with the baptism of David Winton Law, bc1838 at Forglen.   Parents were A. Law & E. Winton.   David Winton Law married Elizabeth Robertson 1864 in  Laurencekirk where he was a master slater and then married Mary L.C. Milne in Dundee in 1871.   I have been unable to find details of his birth and his parents.   Any help would be much appreciated.

In 1841, there's a four-year-old David Law living with the Winton family in Gamrie.

Address: Seatown, Gamrie
James Winton, m, 55, farmer
Jane ", f, 50, -
John ", m, 20, -
Ann ", f, 14, -
Isabel ", f, 11, -
David Law, m, 4, -

All born Banffshire.

Hi Mirren

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Following through from the 1841 as posted by Hume, there is also an entry in the 1851 Census for a 12 yr old David Law born Gamrie who is working as a servant in the Cardno (transcription?) household at Tillinamolt, Tyrie Aberdeenshire.

Sadly nothing on the OPRs that I can see under either Law or Winton. From David's two marraige certs or death cert., are his parents first names shown in full? Also, do they show as alive or deceased at the time of his marriages?

Regards.

From the 1841 Census and the Winton family - there are a number of children showing born in Forglen to James Winton and Jane Duncan on the OPRs including an entry for Elspeth Winton (I'm thinking the E. Winton that you gave as reference for David's mother).

ELSPET WINTON   Birth: 07 MAY 1815 Forglen, Banff

You would guess that David was living at his maternal grandparents in 1841 subject to verification.

Or maybe not!

In the 1851 Census, Elspeth is living with parents James and Jane:

Elspet Winton    35, head, Proprietor Of Houses, b. Forglen
Jessie Sangster 6, niece (?), b. Gamrie
John Sangster    9, son, b. Gamrie
William Sangster 6, son, b. Gamrie
Jane Smith    4, niece, b. Tyrie
James Winton    65, labourer, b. Marnoch, Banffsh
Jane Winton    60, b. Elgin Moray
John Winton    32, agri. lab., brother, b. Bayff (?), Banffsh
Jane Minton    25, sister, b. Alva

You would need to look at the original to confirm details of this transcription. First step, as I mentioned earlier. would be to get actual confirmation of David's mother's first name from one of the certs.

Regards.

Thanks for your reply.   David Law's Marriage certificate to Elizabeth Robertson gives his parents names as Alexander Law & Elspet Winton.   His marriage certificate to Mary L.C. Milne gives his mother's name as Elizabeth.   His death certificate gives his mother's name as Elspeth Law m/s Winton and his father's name this time is Andrew Law.

On both certificates, does it list his father's occupation? I can't find a marriage for Alexander and Elspeth so I'm assuming David was born out of wedlock.

In each of the certificates David's father is a gamkeeper and he was deceased on the first marriage certificate in 1864.   I have also come to the conclusion that perhaps his parents were not married.   As I am new to this website I wasn't sure how much info I had to give.   I have nearly all the info for David Law from 1864 until his death in1915 I just seem to be struggling with his earlier years.   I know I will have to give up at some point.

Hi Mirren i know it's been a while since you posted this one but I was wondering if you had any luck with David Winton Law's parents? My Grandfather was David Winton Law's grandosn also named David Winton Law. I had the same problem as you, I have the his marriage cert showing Alexander Law and Elspeth Winton but could find no trace of them being married either.

Cheers!
