WARING of Chorleywood
« on: Thursday 03 May 07 09:30 BST (UK) »
My father who was born 1912 died 1986 listed as his aunt and next of kin on Australian Light Horse Militia re-enlist papers in 1936:

Mrs E Waring (Aunt)
Bullsand  Farm, (this might be Bullsland Farm)
Chorlewood,
Bucks, England.

(I understand that this is actually part of Hertfordshire) I have googled and found a for sale listing for the farm but really want to find out who this "aunt" actually is.

My grandmother's maiden name was Freeman and she had two sisters whose christian name's were Elizabeth born 1883 & Ethel born 1890 in Chesham, Bucks.  The family can be found in Amersham, Bucks in 1901 census.

I have been unable to find marriages for either of these sister's.  Also in personal correspondence in 1933 my father talks about "Uncle Joe's farm" and there may be no connection but I have tried very hard but despite my best efforst I have had no luck finding any link to the Waring family.

Any help or suggestions (I'm still a novice) greatly appreciated.

Hi Kerry

Welcome to Rootschat.

This may not be much help to you but I can tell you where Bullsland Farm is. Just south of Heronsgate, outside of Chorleywood on the Bucks Herts borders.

If you have a look at Multimap & put in the search United Kingdom, Heronsgate then zoom in you will see the farm just underneath where it says The Swillet. There is an ariel view available as well.

With regard to your fathers aunt, is it possible she was from your grandfathers side & not grandmothers. Could you give a bit more detail as to your fathers name, was he also born Bucks/Herts.

Am I right in thinking there where 3 more Freeman girls, Ellen, Florence & May.??

If I can help at all I'll be happy to try & do so.

Hi Maddie,

Ellen Freeman is my grandmother and yes that is the correct family and there was another sister Alice as well.

I have no idea who my grandfather was as my father had a stepfather called William Symes born 1893 who had  sister Eleanor Symes (known as Nellie) but I have no idea if it could be her.

Hi Kerry

Certainly sounds like a wonderful  farm. I know the area is lovely as my mum grew up in Chorleywood. Still in the countryside but not far from London.  :)

I wonder if Mrs E Waring could be Eleanor Symes, would you know if that is the Eleanor & William in Battersea on the 1901. I don't have access to Ancestry at the moment but going by the index they look likely.

I'll have a look at Ancestry BMD's & see if I can find anything.

I did notice on the advertising for the farm that it has only had 2 owners in the last 60 years. That could be a useful fact if we can't get anything on marriages.

Yes Battersea sounds right, their parents were Edwin & Marian I think.

I have no idea if the Waring's were owners or workers either ... sorry.

Hi Kerry

Just a bit of an update, I think I have found the marriage of Elizabeth Freeman.

From Free BMD I found the birth of Elizabeth Harriet Freeman June qtr 1882  Amersham, who seems to be the likely candidate for your Elizabeth.

Free BMD has a marriage for Elizabeth Harriet Freeman March qtr 1907 Amersham to either Henry James Goodey or Ernest Owen Payne. I had a look for births on both names with mothers maiden name Freeman & the result was, Reginald G Payne Sep qtr 1911 Amersham & Cecil Payne Dec qtr 1913 Amersham.

So, it looks like she married Ernest Owen Payne. Incidentally there is a death for Reginald G Payne June qtr 1913 Amersham, aged 1.

Unless Ernest Payne died & Elizabeth remarried, looks as if Mrs E Waring probably isn't her.

I'm still trying to find a marriage for Ethel but not having much luck up till 1921.

I'll keep looking. :)

Wow thanks so much for finding out that information Maddie, I had wondered about that birth being the older sister Elizabeth but the census didn't show a middle name.  But had no idea who she had married.

I guess I will put that one on the list of certificates that I need to acquire.  Sad to read about the baby.

My father who was born a Freeman wasn't born in Amersham.  He was born in Hackney at a Salvation Army Hospital for unmarried mothers, but Ellen listed her home address in Amersham so I was able to trace the family.  She was still at the same address at the time of her marriage in 1916.  My dad was raised using the Symes surname.   He was very guarded about the information he gave us about his family.

I really appreciate the effort you are going to.
