BUXTON - Brewers of Hunsdon
« on: Friday 04 May 07 13:48 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,
I am tyring to find exactly where the family of John H Buxton lived in Hunsdon.
I have found him and his fairly substantial household on the 1881 census.
He was living at Bury House.
Anyone know where that was in the village?
His occupation is given as a Brewer.
My interest is that he employed my great grandmother, Annie.
I know that Annie lived at the Lodge, Hunsdon. She was a laundress. My recently found cousin, has a carriage clock which was presented to Annie on her retirement by J H Buxton.
I always thought the Lodge was connected to Hunsdon House, any help appreciated.
Cheers,
Irene

Hi Irene,
Just for interest, in the 1890 Kelly's Directory, John Henry Buxton Esq. is a magistrate living at Hunsdon Bury (further on in the directory called Hunsdonbury), Ware. In Hunsdon Lodge is listed a William Bagley.
Also listed as a magistrate is a Thomas Fowell Buxton. From family research I know that he was a brewer and that the family link in to the Gurney family (by Elizabeth Fry's sister), well known 'Quakers' or Friends. Haven't traced John Henry though, he maybe one of the missing links!
Best wishes, haliared
