Thanks Jan.... I am not sure if this is barking up the wrong tree but I will file the details it away just in case it turns out to be my missing link!  If only they had a son called John born circa 1867!

Cheers and thanks again!

No I noticed that, ha-ha.... the John I am looking for is my GGF John Melbourne (or he could have started out as John Milburn) born circa 1867/1868 in Newcastle - probably on Tyne.  His father is also John (on my John's wedding certificate as platelayer so not much like a sawyer really!).

John Melbourne (Milburn?) born Newcastle on Tyne (under Lyne?) married Annie (Johanna) nee Hughes (previously Donoghue) in Ashton under Lyne. August 1890.  I have them in 1890 Census living in Denbighshire with Annie’s son William Donoghue and in 1901 living in Maesteg, Glamorgan, South Wales with William plus daughters Margaret Ann, Elizabeth (both born in Denbishshire) and son Richard Thomas born in Maesteg.  There were other children later all born in Maesteg, including my gf Sam.

I am not able to pin him down in the 1881 census but have a possible Newcastle on Tyne John Milburn, for whom I have purchased a birth certificate which does give his father as John (as stated at John and Annie's marriage) but I am still not sure how I can tell if I have the right person.
