death registration

Hi all,
Is it possible for someone to die and to be omitted from the death records?
Cheers
Erin  :)

Hi Barbara, thanks for your reply
Do you think they get omitted from the image only, or do you think they literally aren't registered? I'm wondering whether a certificate might exist even though it's not on the image.
Cheers

Hi Erin,

Seriously, I think sometimes they just weren't registered, when civil registration came in in 1837 some didn't seem to bother.

Then again it depends where you're looking, if using freebmd, that's not yet complete, it usually states next to the year what percentage of that quarter have been transcribed. Also some pages may be too hard to read and so transcribed with * (there are plenty of those)

Don't forget to look for just 'male' or 'female' at the end of a surname list, and also watch out for marks indicating extra names at bottom of pages.

Would you like to tell us the name and date you're after?

Barbara

An Act for registering Births, Deaths, and Marriages in England.
[17 August 1836]
6 & 7 Will. IV. c.86 Section XXVII.

......and every Person who shall bury or perform any Funeral or any religious Service for the Burial of any dead Body for which no Certificate shall have been duly made and delivered as aforesaid, either by the Registrar or Coroner, and who shall not within Seven Days give Notice thereof to the Registrar, shall forfeit and pay any Sum not exceeding Ten Pounds for every such Offence.

The requirement was that the death 'ought if possible to be registered before burial', or, as required by the Act, within seven days, but this was not always complied with and led to some deaths being unregistered.

Barbara,

I have trawled through the ancestry images from 1891 to 1901 looking for Maria Callaghan's death she was born in Leeds c1854. Her son Francis is living with his sister in 1901 at age 16, so I am assuming she died.

I posted a 1901 census lookup request on the yorkshire section of this site but there's no sign of her.  ???

Thanks
Erin  :)

Hello Erin
Was she a widow in 1891? Could she have remarried?

Hi Barbara,
I suppose she could have remarried, I haven't found a match on yorkshirebmd, but I haven't gone through all the images like I did with deaths. I figured she must have died as her son wasn't with her.
