Which Family History Course?
« on: Tuesday 08 May 07 00:01 BST (UK) »
I am keen on doing a diploma/certificate course in family history/local history.  At the WDYTYA Live Show I was impressed by the University of Dundee Online course.

I would really have liked to go to a "live" taught course, but I cannot find any in Hampshire, or London.  I also searched these boards.  The AGRA course no longer seems to be available.

I would be very grateful for any experience of courses, recommendations or suggestions from you all.

I have been Googling around and tonight came up with some possibilities.  If others would find it useful, perhaps we could have a sticky thread about Family History/Genealogy/Local History courses?  I will paste in what I found tonight:-

University of Dundee
Certificate in Family & Local History
http://www.dundee.ac.uk/prospectus/distlearning/courseprofiles/familyhist.htm

University of Strathclyde
Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma in Genealogical Studies
(Campus-based and Online)
http://www.cll.strath.ac.uk/cpd/genealogy/

University of Central Lancashire
University Certificate/Advanced Certificate in Family History
http://www.uclan.ac.uk/online/

University of Oxford
Advanced Diploma in Local History via the Internet
http://diplocalhistory.conted.ox.ac.uk/

Birkbeck, University of London    NO LONGER AVAILABLE Now there are genealogy and archive modules in day or evening in London, also some interesting sounding London/social history modules.   see the end of this thread.

The Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) (in Canterbury)
The Correspondence Course in Genealogy  (and various others)
http://www.ihgs.ac.uk/courses/index.php

Society of Genealogists (in London)
Various lectures and short courses
http://www.sog.org.uk/events/calendar.shtml

The Open University
Start Writing Family History
http://www.open.ac.uk/

The Oral History Society
Oral History Society Training: An Introduction to Oral History
http://www.ohs.org.uk/training/intro.php

Incidentally, I am not aiming to be a professional genealogist, but like studying and would like to get my teeth into family history!

I think a sticky thread is a good idea..

This one looks interesting... it's not genealogy but PUBLIC HISTORY at Ruskin College (Oxfordshire).

Whoops, I missed out Strathclyde which also looks good and can lead to a Masters degree course in 2008.

I have modified the post to include this.

Has no-one else any comments about these and other courses?

And there are Pharos (who were also at WDYTYA Live)

They do short online courses on various family history topics, which are reasonably priced.

Anyone done any of these?

Thanks for the link to Pharos...I was thinking about doing one of the Scottish courses as they look quite good but had lost the link  :)

I quite fancy trying the OU one next year as it's quite reasonably priced...the others are too expensive at the moment.

I did look at the Open University course A173 Start Writing Family History, and it looks a good course.

Coming from the OU it will be high quality and well tutored.

However, I decided not to go for it at the moment as it appears to me that it is a course that is quite academic and is not particularly about genealogy as such.

I suggest that anyone seriously interested in this course reads the course content in detail to make sure that it is right for them. This is at: http://www3.open.ac.uk/courses/bin/p12.dll?C01A173

I would be very interested in hearing from anybody who has actually taken the course.

Hi John,
There were some Rootschatters who took this course last year and did provide some feedback on it. I will see if I can find the thread for you.

Thanks Linda,

I did do a quick search on Rootschat before I posted, but could not find anything of any depth.

I should say that I am a great fan of the Open University, after all they made a big mistake when they let me have a degree a few years ago  ;D
