Help needed - soldier but with which regiment? - completed -
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 18:01 BST (UK) »
Hallo,
Might be the wrong area to post:

my g-g-g-g-grandfather Benjamin Jury (b. 1821 in Kent) married Mary Ann Hunt in Dec 1848, in the Parish of East Itchham/Stickham/Wickham!! - Registation district of Dartford.

His rank/profession was soldier and he was resident at time of marriage "in the Parish of Holy Trinity in Cambridge".

Does anyone know where he may have been stationed and with which army he might have served?  I know that he was a chelsea pensioner in the 1861 census but do not know how long he served.

I cannot find them in the 1851 Census either.

I am also having problems finding his father and mother in the census (Benjamin John Jury and Elizabeth).

Would appreciate any possible help.

Hi Vivien

Firstly, he would probably have married in East Wickham (a parish in the Dartford registration district) http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/dartford.html

Who were the marriage witnesses?  What was his father's occupation on the marriage certificate?

As his residence is given as Cambridge at the time of marriage, I would suggest that he was probably stationed at Cambridge and, perhaps, returning home to Kent to marry :-\

I notice, from one of your other posts, that you have some possible birth places etc. for some of his children.  Although not always, birth certificates and baptism entries do sometimes give the regiment of the father or at lease put the family in a given position at a precise date.  Baptisms may be the "cheaper" option if the originals can be located.

Did daughter Madeline marry Walter IMPLETON September quarter 1876 Islington registration district ref. 1b 393 and could it be her (with perhaps sister Alice) in the 1881 census at 40 Hampden Road, Islington in the 1881 census ref. RG11/247 folio 79 page 40?

Do you think he is part of the following family (children baptised to Benjamin & Elizabeth JURY)?

Josh Henry 3 Jan 1819 Wesleyan Chapel, Sheerness
Benjamin John 1 Jul 1821 Wesleyan Chapel, Sheerness
Edward Christopher 4 May 1823 Wesleyan Chapel, Sheerness
and, possibly
Josiah 30 Jun 1833 Independant Chapel, Chatham

Hallo Casalguidi,

thanks for your reply and the information.  I thought it was East Wickham but the registrar/vicar has such bad handwriting I wanted to verify.

I suppose I will have to post on the Cambridge site to see if anyone knows which regiment was stationed there around the time.

I am not sure about Madeline as she is the sister of my g-grandmother so I haven't taken too much notice of her.  But you are probably right as the parents died in Islington.

How did you get the "family" of Benjamin John together.  I found the birth and baptism date of Ben-John in familysearch but nothing else.
It does look as though you have found the right family. The parents are right. This gives me a bit more scope of finding the family in an earlier census.
Thanks again for that.

Hi Vivien

To try and establish baptisms of children with the same parents on the IGI you can do a "parent search".  Just enter the names of the parents ie. Benjamin JURY and Elizabeth in the parent boxes and leave everything else (except location) blank. http://www.familysearch.org

Hi Vivien
Try www.nationalarchives.gov.uk and look under WO22. Chelsea out pensioners records according to where they received their pension payments. It gives their regiment and other info. Unfortunately it is not searchable on line.
