On the Sea?
« on: Wednesday 09 May 07 21:01 BST (UK) »
Hi Have an Ancestor, Elizabeth Gash described in the census as being born "on the sea". Does anyone know what that means?

Hi Mickmac,

As far as I am aware that means born on board a ship whilst travelling.

Thanks for that patrish.

Has anyone got any idea why the family would be on a boat in 1805? The only things I can think of are the navy, colinisation ships ro transportation - but she turns up later in Nottingam.

Is there anything else on the census to give you a clue, if you post the reference we could take a look.

Must admit it does sound odd for those early times, could parents have been missionery's  ???

She married George Morris in 1824 and Lived the rest of her life in Nottingham. Born 1805. Appears on the census as "Born on the sea".

Can't find any birth records. Gash isn't a common name but hard to link to any possible parents.

The Family Records Centre in London does hold a register of births at sea, I have looked at it myself a long time ago but I cant remeber what date it starts from. :(

Is there no clue on the marriage as to who her parents are.  ???

Still looking into it. Just realised of course that the Battle of Tralfalgar was in 1805.

Perhaps her father was a soldier?, she could have been born on the homeward voyage from some foreign land.

Have you seen the register entry for her marriage? any clues with the witnesses?

Not seen the register yet.  I've looked on Ancestry.co.uk and have the date as 27th December 1824 at North Collingham. Nottinghamshire Parish and Probate records. No other information.
