Cause of Death
« on: Sunday 13 May 07 00:24 BST (UK) »
Hi - I have a cause of death as - Chronic Organic Distate of the Lungs, Liver and uteris.  The girl was only 21 years old and she died in Victoria, Australia in 1856.
I have shown this to a copy of doctors who have the opinion that distate should be Disease - but on the certificate it is clearly distate.
So I was wondering if anyone out there has ever seen this word and if so what is its meaning?
Kind Regards
Megan

I've looked on two websites, Archaic Medical Terms and Causes of Death in the Late 19th Century and neither has the word distate included.  Perhaps the registrar was copying a doctor's handwriting when he wrote out the death certificate and couldn't read it properly!!

Hi Liz - that makes sense, I didn't think of that.
Thank you
