Hi Selena

Prisons were recorded in the same way as everywhere else, just a separate sheet was used for each institution.  You might find that the prisoners were recorded by their intials, rather than their names however.

Who are you looking for?

kind regards, Arranroots  ;)

If you're using Ancestry, go to the 1891 census for Wales, click on Glamorgan, then St John and the prison is its own enumeration district.

You could ask at the Record Office if they have the gaol calendars for Cardiff - was your chap from Cardiff (ie there in in 1881)?  If he was & they have you could find out what he was convicted of and a whole heap of other info.  Does the occupation and age etc fit?

Is this his wife's death?
Ellen Shaughnsey aged 27 Cardiff june qtr 1891 vol 11a pg 213

If he had been a seaman, he might just have at sea in 1891. I think Royal Navy were recorded, but mariners weren't if outside coastal waters. And mine tended to make sure they were absent for nearly every census - grrr!

oops- left out registration district
