Sarah,
According to the Victoria County History, Back Street is now Upminster Road.
“In 1702 an earlier Bell stood in Back Street (Upminster Road). By 1733 it was the Horseshoe and Can, and by 1769 the Lamb (and Crown). It ceased to be a public house in 1789.”

Upminster Road South leads from Rainham Village into Upminster Road. I suspect this was all Upminster Road until the old A13 dual carriageway cut it in two (now called New Road).

Also, if you look at the Victorian Ordnance Survey map you will see Upminster Road was not the main access road to the village, which makes sense as to why it was called Back Lane.

Hope this helps.

My great grandfather, Frederick Fynn, was a blacksmith in Rainham and worked in back lane, upminster south road.
