Carter or is it Rowe
« on: Wednesday 16 May 07 15:29 BST (UK) »
My great grandmother  Rosa was born to unmarried Harriet Carter in  Lymington 1867, lived for the first four years with  presumed grandparents, with her name showing as Carter. Then ten years later 1881 is named as Roe. still living with the grandparents, but was said to have been born Portsmouth. Looking through the baptisims for Lytchett Maltravers where she lived there is a baptism in 1868 of a Rose Roe Carter ( first names) to a William and Jemmima Roe from Portsea. This was for the same date as the year of her birth.
I hasten to say that I have totally confused and would be interested in anyones views.
Thanks
Tricia

Hi Tricia,

Do you have Rosa's birth certificate?  There was a Rose Carter birth registered in March qtr 1867 at Lymington  2b  579.

Where was she living when found on the census with grandparents?

Could William and Jemmima Roe be related to the Carters; perhaps Jemmima and Harriet were sisters?

Sorry it's all questions but they might help untangle this!

Just had a quick look at 1881 census; it seems as though Alexander Budden married Harriet:

BUDDEN Alexander Mar 1876 Poole 5a 434

one of the brides listed is a Harriet Carter.

Found on www.freebmd.org.uk

Rose/Rosa shown as a boarder though!

Hi Nanny Jan
Thank you very much for all the trouble you have taken.  I have at times been pulling my hair out with poor old Rosa!!

I do have a copy of Rosa's birth certificate.  Her mother was Harriet Carter and stated that she was living in  Boldre.

She is on the 1871 and 1881 census taken in Lytchett Maltravers, Dorset.

I cannot find a connection with William or Jessica,  I believe her maiden name was Hatchard.  Although William does state on the 1871 census that he was born in Bolder!!

Another funny or odd thing is that Rosa married my great grandad who was a Frederick Carter!!!  Do you know I have never found their marriage certificate.  The plot thickens.
Thanks once again
