Thomas King Chemist York
« on: Friday 18 May 07 19:26 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace back Thomas King who was a chemist in Brownlow Hill Liverpool.  He was born in York around 1816, had a brother named Joseph born 1826.  He married Mary Ann Seller (born York 18 Dec 1814) in York 10 Dec 1840 in St Crux, York.  He was in Liverpool after his marriage so I can find no family in York. There are several possibilities but does anyone know who he was related to?  Would he do an apprenticeship to be a Chemist?

Duckweed,

There are some transcripts of York Trade Directories at

http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/YKS/ARY/York/

There appear to be a number of KINGs in trade in the City in early 1800s.  In particular in 1829 a Richard KING is listed as a Chemist and Druggist of 7 Goodramgate - may be a connection.

Do you have full details of 1840 marriage?  If not I may be able to look it up for you sometime as this should give Thomas's father's name.

Do you have what could be Thomas and Mary's son, Joshua Seller KING (born Liverpool) staying with his uncle Charles SELLER in York in 1851?  Let me know if you would like the details.

Thanks I had a look.  The problem is I don't know if he was a phamacist.  He may have worked in a brewery.  His wifes family were Wine merchants after all.  I will have to search the Liverpool trade directories to see if I can find what kind of Chemist he was.

Duckweed

I had chance to look-up the St Crux marriage in the parish register which provides a bit more information.

Mary ANN SELLER, of full age, Spinster, abode Pavement, father Charles SELLER Spirit merchant

Thanks ever so.  That clears up what kind of chemist for a start and who his father was.  His father doesn't seem to be there or at least not a witness so maybe he was dead by then.  I'll look up George King in the 1841.  I know all the Seller branch of the family.  Great I'll get searching.
