I have several research surnames (unrelated) some members of whom moved from Middlesex to Erith in the latter half of the 1800's.  They were all back in Middlesex within 20-30 years.  Why???  What was the Erith attraction????

I'd be interested in the reply - my rellies went from south Wales to Erith in the early 1900s.  I assumed it was mining?

I'm not sure there was much mining around Erith.

I think it grew because of its closeness to the Thames and London.

Cable production  and the manufacture of armaments (Erith was close to Woolwich Arsenal) were important.

There was a Royal dockyard at Eirth, not sure exactly when it closed but probably fits your time frame.

The railway arrived in Eirth around 1850.

Also Vickers were a major employer in the area. Was one of the largest industrial area in SE England during the late victorian period.

Popultion 1841 = 2082  /  1901 = 25296
