BURIAL look up please Romford
« on: Saturday 19 May 07 19:32 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the death/burial of George Austin or Robert George Austin.
All his life he was known as George but he was baptised and registered Robert Georgein Newton Abbot Devon in 1847, he lived in Wanstead where he married 1870, he was in Forest Gate 1922 elec roll and then believed to live in Romford until he died, but we can't find him.
Thank you for any help.
Drinda.

Essex RO has records for these Romford parishes:-
St Alban's
St Andrew
St John the Divine and
St Edwards.
Only the last one includes any burial records (presumably because the first 3 did not have any burials in their churchyards.)
I looked at St Edwards burials D/P 346/1/20 burials 1855-1937 and found no Austin burials after 1922. In fact the number of burials declined sharply so that after 1918 there were burials in only 1924, 1926, 1927 and a long gap until 1937.
So if he was buried in Romford it is likely to have been a municipal cemetery.
If he was buried in Forest Gate that probably would have been registered in West Ham Registration district.
Have you looked in GRO death index for George or Robert George Austin?

If you look at the GRO death index for 1922 March quarter you will see that included amongst various George Austins there is an entry for:
George Austin
Registration District: Newton A*
Volume 5b
page244
age 75.

The age at death tallies exactly with the year of birth of the one you seek.
The electoral register for 1922 is likely to have been prepared from information provided in the autumn of the previous year. A check with the electoral register will reveal whether this is so.

*presumably Abbot

Hi Clincher,
Thank you for the lookup, I had seen the George Austin on the GRO index, but in 1922 electoral Roll, living at 17, Forest Street, Forest Gate, Essex, there was William Austin, [son of George] William's wife and a "George Austin" who I took to be the George I am looking for, and it still could be.  He could have left Forest gate and gone back to Devon to live or just a visit after the Electoral roll was taken, in which case he will not be on the Newton Abbot Electoral Register,

George was born at Bishopsteignton, so I am going to contact the OPC [online Parish cleak] for that parish and see if she can find his burial and also look at the 1922 Electoral register for Newton Abbot.

Thanks again for your help, I'll let you know if this is him,
Rita.
